Done a private job the other day and fitted 4 mains downlights. Went back the next day and one of the lamps had blown. Few days later the rest have gone. I am getting blamed and they won't pay me as the think the problem is with me! Even though they had them on all the time

the lamps supplyed are crap whenever we fit downlighters we simply chuck the lamps suppled and fit philips lamps
touching the front of the glass is fine
it was the old original open front ones , you had to avoid touching the quartz bulb inside the dicroic reflector

i tend to avoid touching them as much as possible anyway probably just out of habit like with halogen floods

that's because with floods, you are handling the actual filament enclosure. same with G4s. with downlighter lamps you are handling the outer shell, not the lamp (bulb) itself.

Yeah i know but its just force of habit, don't really know why i do it but i've always done it with halogens, the fixed gu10 lampholders need that rubber sucker otherwise you can't get the pigging bulb in anyway

She is also blaming me for a fancy light that doesn't work. Connected it up, nothing happened. Tested for voltage and had 230 as live and neutral so there is no reason why it shouldn't be working other than its a faulty fitting.

Fitted a Phillips 50W 1000Hr , in a temporary fitting that allowed holder to get hot , did not last a week of normal use , ( trying Sylvania 40W 2000Hr MAPLIN )

but have LED for thermal disaster fitting !

used 12V 50w stuff , lasted well , dissapointed with 240V GU10s

I tell my clients that the lamps are cheap, and you never know how they have been handled in the warehouse. For all you know, someone may have drop kicked it across the floor, weakening an already poor filament.
I then advise them that they should buy there lamps from a wholesaler, as they should have been treated better than the ones from AsTesMoriSain.

But saying that I did recently get 2x 500w halogen lamps from the wholesaler, and as soon as I switched the light on they blew. One after the other.
It's just luck of the draw sometimes.

ok just because the customers are women means nothing none of us would be here without women secondly did you check there is enough air space around the fittings when you fitted them if not there should be third is there an upstairs to the house ? many times if there is if there is movement in the floor above the life of the lamps are greatly reduced as said by others fit them with led's and just explain to the customer why you are doing it and if it was not a priced job pass the cost of the new bulbs on to them

the rubber sucker normally comes with the fittings that you can not get your fingers in to the fitting to turn the bulb its not there because you are not supposed to touch them as said many times its only if you are touching the halogen bulb its self the oil of your fingers would cause a hot spot on the bulb and may shorten its life span
