Hello chaps,
bit of background I've got 2330 2 and 3, nvq3, 2391, pat, 17th ed, solar pv, couple of fire alarm courses and about to take my sssts next month, and I currently work for a worldwide facilities management company.

basically I don't want to be on the tools in 5 years time when I hit 30, I've been looking through the threads on the hnc in elec eng, via teesside, but the college of north west London in willeseden are doing it for 2500 3 evenings a week on a tues, weds, and a thurs 6-9,
firstly is this going to be too much to handle? I mean like too much in a short space of time?
I think the pros out way to cons in my opinion (to do it) but would like to seek yours to help me out? I would like to be in a class room to ask for help from a tutor rather than struggle at home if it was distance learning.

or would you recommend doing the old 2391:20 first? ( can't remember the c&g code)

Sorry for the long post but I would appreciate everyone's opinion.
thanks guy
tom

lol tommy but your right really.

So what sort of jobs will a HNC open the door for, any examples. Also what sort of money would you be comanding.

Probably silly questions but its not an apprentice based learning system is it. I mean say I did the HNC and passed I would literally have no experience presumably in the job that I would be going for as I would be working as a domestic electrician whilst I studyed.

I like learning and rekon I should concider this

Like I said earlier, opportunities are endless. Design, Management, whatever, you can pretty much go as high as you want until you hit Senior Substation Managers and what not, in which you'll preferably have a degree. And it's not apprentice based learning but a lot of HNCs are done now in conjunction with the Higher Apprenticeship eg NVQ4, but you don't have to. There'll probably be apprentices on your course.

The route I'm aimin for is a supervisory/management in facilities management, within the next 15 years I'm aiming for iosh/neebosh related health and safety, each to there own tho ay! You have to have some type of drive!

There's a supervisor on my firm who's my age and when it comes to technical support on a job he's a thick as ****, so I defo need the experience first

I work for a major player in the industry and have just started on a new contract on substations. They are not bothered about technical qualifications as the design will be done by someone else. What they do want is iosh/ smsts as mandatory Certs or you won't be doing any supervising!!

I completed the HNC from Teeside University 7 years ago. It is the first and only distance learning I have ever done. Like you I could have done it locally day release or night school. What swayed it for me was being able to customise exactly what units I did. This enabled me to fill gaps in my knowledge. You do need to be very dissaplined in the hours you spend each week.

The coursework that Teeside supply is excellent and is all you need. There is also additional recommended reading to supplement your learning. Support is also available from the University or other students.

If you require any more info please PM me.
