HI everyone,

Is it acceptable to wire a hand dryer from a ring final in to a 13 amp FCU. The ring main in question has 30MA RCD protection.
Or, is it best to wire a new radial circuit for it??
There is a socket I can spur off that is easy to get to.

Thanks

Initially you should know the load you are trying to install.
If the hand dryer is 2kW then it should be fine as a fused spur, (although they burn out annoyingly easily), make sure you have secure connections for the cables so that there is less chance of an overheat.

In theory, its quite capable of being connected to a spur of the RFC.
A couple of things to think about is length of the cable, installation method and how often the dryer is going to be used.
Could you install the FCU as part of the ring?

I guess the doubts would be the fact that it is fixed equipment and demand on the rest of the RFC and the design of the circuit.

He is just using it in his bathroom at his house. It’s not like it’s in pub or anything like that. There is no other load on the RFC really. So,you think it would be acceptable to run 2.5mm spur from the RFC? It’s only about 1m from the socket to the FCU.

You will need to ascertain that the socket you intend to spur this Hand drier from, is not a spur from the RFC as well. Who will be testing and certifying this circuit, your profile suggests that you are not an electrician.

No, it’s not a spur. I am fully qualified time spent sparky. Have been for 8 years now. I mainly do commercial projects, when I have wired in hand dryers usually on there own radial circuits. I am fully aware that you can’t spur from a spur. I will admit when it comes
To domestic work I probably need to brush up on my regs etc. Just wanted advise that’s all, isn’t that what this forum is for ??

Yes of course, my reply was in response to your Profile, under what quals do you hold? none was your answer, hence my conclusion that perhaps you weren't an electrician
Probably best to update you profile to avoid any embarrassment. Down to you in the long run.
