I spent a long time just arsing about doing crappy unfulfilling pointless factory jobs just watching things going past on a belt or getting covered in welding fumes, sparks and grinding dust listening to silly, pointless gabble at breaktimes. I just wanted something better and would encourage anyone to get a skill for themselves as much as anybody else and thanks Llandrillo.......it does feel good.....

The best way to approach this exam i found gooner is to first find a quiet spot in the house and really get into guidance note 3 every chance you get. Buy a cd with past papers on it and test yourself under exam conditions (2 1/2 hours) and go on swindonmassive which is a really good website with loads of stuff for sparks and students alike. When the time is up STOP and see how many you answered as this is good for getting upto speed. 2 1/2 hours may seem like plenty of time.........it aint! City & guilds tell you to do the short answer questions first but i would advise against this as they are only worth 3 points each. Go straight to the 6 structured questions first as this is where the points are (15 each) Try to answer all the questions as even if you dont get the whole question right you can still pick up points for a partial answer/attempt. The pass freshold is 90 points and theres plenty up for grabs so just relax and move through it steady and i am sure you will pass. The structured questions will often entail drawing how to perform a test such as how to do an R1 R2. Couloured pens here mate and dont waste time outlining conductors etc, just a line with a coloured felt tip pen will do with a bit of yellow on the end for copper. What you will find is the questions all follow a theme and are just variations on that theme such as testing ring finals etc. Often the scenario will have a dimmer switch (variable resistor) or a smoke or heat which should warn you that part of the question will involve an IR test so watch out for em as they are designed to trip you up. And lastly, Dont forget that a continuity test is performed using a LOW RESISTANCE OHMMETER not a continuity tester as some people put down and IR testing isnt a "megger" but an INSULATION RESISTANCE METER". Our instructor told us on the c&g report that people keep on using the wrong terminology for test instruments and lose points as a result.
Best o luck mate.
Glenn.
