Had a potential customer email a link to this supposed bible of job pricing.
I quoted him ÂŁ400 to supply and install 8 downlights in his kitchen/diner/small lounge room - its open plan with lights to be spread between 2 circuits. Figured it is a days work.
He then says he thought ÂŁ250 would be a more appropriate price and that he would prefer to source the led downlights, switches and even the cable, suggested 1mm instead of 1.5mm twin and earth aswell the tight wad! He queried my suggestion of hager downlight junction boxes and would rather I use cheap sub ÂŁ1 junction boxes, I explained the Hager ones would speed things up and save on labour. He has now decided that I should supply just the labour as he thinks tradesfolk mark everything up to maximise profit,
He says he read on priceyourjob.co.uk that ÂŁ300 max is a suitable price for supply and fit and he recognises there is 8 lights and I will need to run the cables and tweak the existing cabling to his pendant lights. So would like to supply materials to keep costs down!?
Some customers really drive me mad.. I have told him that I no longer wish to be considered for the job on his terms and my quote as I submitted on my terms stands if he wishes to accept it or not is his choice.

The bloke sent me a itemised list of things in toolstation he thinks the job will need. The internet is a dangerous place it turns customers into nightmares! a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I felt like telling him that once he has the materials to come on the forum and ask for a how to guide...then we can have a laugh.

maybe we need a guy like this .

We joke about that, but this day and age i sadly think it would be all too easy for anybody to accuse a old teacher of something like that and they are guilty until proven otherwise. the system has gone too far towards the presumption of guilt. The accuser even if lying is very unlikely to be punished as they are protected and it would be rarer still for the plod to investigate an accuser.
Tell that to the sparks that got screwed for ÂŁ750 by some chancer in the SCC.

Especially if its 2 seperate visits - the 2nd on a later day to 2nd fix after the plaster has dried and been painted!
No... I use expanding foam and quick drying polyfiller. It dries quicker than the ink on paying in slip at bank. Once dry its hard as nails and no refunds if it falls out. Im going to get a cowboy hat for when i do such quotes then tell them im no such thing!

Charge what you think is fair...to you too. Don't undersell yourself, your skills, your experience. When that happens, you lose faith in your ability and worth, and that should not happen.

Im' Not a sparks but the company I work for charges ÂŁ55 A light
Had a guy earlier ask for a quote via email, says he wanted 30 downlights replaced, he didnt give too much info so I emailed him a rough price of ÂŁ30 to ÂŁ40 per fixture if its simple like for like replacement with easy cable runs and wiring is upto scratch etc.. but what he meant was it was 30 little fixed lights the sort that you cant replace bulbs in running off a transformer, He has 3 transformers with 10 bulbs off each one, soem of which have failed. He wants several 240v downlights as replacement.
Should heard the shock in his voice when he phoned me back asking if the price really is ÂŁ900+... Once he explained things a bit better he accepted my quote but if the customer is not specific they cant moan...
On the other hand I had a wealthy young Qatari woman have me fit lights in her walk in wardrobe and ensuite last year, for her money was meaningless, when it come to pay she went off and come back with a pile of crisp new ÂŁ50's! the contents of her wardrobe are worth more than most peoples houses.. thankfully she had it moved out before hand..

^^ I went to change 10 x MR16 lamps to GU10 LED's just before xmas ......

6 of the MR16's had individual transformers

4 were connected to 2 transformers - but the connections & transformers were screwed to the joists and needed holes cut in the ceiling to access and improve .....

Fortunately my price was an estimate and after I had finished the customer needed to find a plasterer & decorator.

Just had a look at that site. He will have misread it. The job he was probably looking at is titled:

Replace old lighting in kitchen with LED downlighters - supply & fit ÂŁ200-ÂŁ300 2-3 hours

That's replacing existing, not installing new, and it doesn't give an amount.
It actually gives quite a fair account of general prices saying a customer should expect to pay ÂŁ150-ÂŁ200 a day depending on location.
