UK Heating Controls Wiring

Hi. I’m a heating engineer who primarily services and fixes boilers. But I also install smart heating controls such as Hive & Nest etc.

When diagnosing faults I’m obviously testing wiring continuity, checking devices and then with installing smart controls I’m checking circuits, removing old kit and wiring in new.

Recently a customer called to say that they had a spark out to identify what was tripping the electrics. Turns out it was apparently the boiler and the spark could touch it to identify what the cause was. I went out and eventually found it was one of the zone valves. I’m always linking things out to prove/disprove they’re functioning or not.

My question is what qualification or certification do I need if any or what certification could I get to formally show I’m competent for the work I’m doing? Also I’m keen to expand my electrical knowledge. TIA. Peter

As you’re in Scotland, there’s no Part P to worry about, and what you’re doing doesn’t need notification or tested to bs7671.
You could spend money on a short course that gives you a domestic installer status, others may have a better idea than me.

Although you probably do have knowledge of safe isolation and of fault finding, it's most likely self taught so you have no evidence of any assessment by anyone.

Thanks for the course pointer. I’ve done fault finding courses and have a cert for safe isolation. Just wanted to expand my knowledge
