Aunties heating is playing up, when she switches on the heating it's not firing up the boiler. Hot water switched on it's doing as it should & firing up the boiler. Had a brief look at it in the passing & when the heating is turned on there's 240v going to stat, returning from stat to valve (white wire) yet there's nothing coming back from orange wire to fire up boiler. Why isn't there 240v coming back from valve to fire up the boiler? Someone told me that I didn't to connect to the white wire but he wasn't totally sure. According to the drawing in the leaflet you do? Anyway just to temporarily fire up the boiler I never connected it to the white, connected the return from the stat straight to the return switch for the boiler & everything is going fine, radiators are warm in every room. Is it just a case of it's been connected up wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

So you had a wiring diagram that told you to connect a cable but because someone told you not to you didn't?
There's a bloke over there who says you can't fly but I reckon he's full of it. Off you go to the roof mate

It sounds like the valve head is knackered (actually it'll just be a micro switch, but good luck changing that in a 3 port)
This is assuming that the system is a Y plan with a 3 port valve based on the fact the heating is connected to the white wire.
What you have done as a temporary fix will cause the hot water to carry on heating when the cylinder is up to temperature thus overheating the hot water and potentially scalding your aunty or bursting the header tank and flooding the house.
But what the hell, you carry on mucking around with things you don't understand, it's only your family you are putting at risk!

The system is not working as per the drawing though so someone suggested to temporarily connect it the way it is & it now works. I've traced each cable from the junction box & it is definitely been connected correctly.
One valve, mid valve. The wiring is connected as the drawing.
It can't be the valve as the plumber seemed to think it had a dodgy valve the other day so he swapped it over. I thought he'd maybe been given a faulty new valve so he got another replacement & it's still the same. I can't understand why power goes to the valve but doesn't return to fire up the boiler? The bit where I says temporarily may have been a small hint that it won't be left like this.
