Actually, there is something....
Occasionally I come across a metal back box that is corroding away. Sometimes it's as if the metal has become one with the brickwork, at others it's as if it's decaying into rusty blackness.
Usually it's on the ground floor of an old (150 years +) house, but not at every point. What causes this? Do we know?

possible (rising damp) failure Mr Rigby. or damp bridging between cavity.

yep.rising or penetrating damp. worse in coastal areas due to the salt.
