Hello,

I`m a german electrician master and want to move to Scotland in the next year with my wife and our daughter.

I have many questions and hope that you can give me some informations from inside the UK.

At first I want to ask if there is a guild or something in the UK which is responsible for all electricians. In Germany we have a "Elektriker Innung" which is responsible.
Maybe you can tell me if there is something in the UK too so I can contact it.

And I read a lot about a 17th grade edition. What is that and do I need this too?

Thank you so far and greetings from Munich

17th Edition is the British Standard for electrical wiring.( BS7671). you can do a course, think it's 3 days.cost about ÂŁ300. " open book" exam. you will need a copy of the regulations ÂŁ50, and the on site guide ÂŁ20.

Thank you a lot for the informations and the welcomes.

May I ask you some more questions?

What exactly is the 16th or 17th Edition. Do I have to pass a examination at the end of the course? Do I have to update this qualification in regular intervals. Is there are a guild which is responsible for electricians all over the UK?

Thank you for your answers

The 17th Edition refers to the most recent version of the British Standard 7671 for Wiring Regulations which came into force in July 2008. 16th Edition refers to the previous version.

Exams to prove your knowledge on this are organised by City and Guilds - see Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations | Construction and Building | Electrical Installation | City & Guilds

2382 is the code number for the City and Guilds course and exam on the 17th Edition of BS7671.

So you will see electricians and employers refer to '17th Edition', 'BS7671' and '2382' - which all really refer to different aspects of the same thing.

In Germany you have DIN VDE 0100 as an equivalent.
