hello - Urgently need a PAT Testers help Please

Hi there

I did the c&G course last yeat to pat test our kit, ( all 15 items at the time so straight forward ) this year I ahve over 50 items to do but having problems, as I do not have much experience can anyone possibly help me ?

This time i have a CCTV PVR but really confused, It has 2 pin ac adaptor, going into a class II adaptor, however the actual PVR has no class II markings and if I tesy as class I it fails the earth bond test so..

If not markings - test as class I - did this but failed earth bond so item has failed???
If it has class II adaptor - do I assume/test as class II?

I dont do this for a living just once a year so really rusty.

Thank you, whats the score with if no marking test as class I ?? Surely if it turns out to be class II it will fails and you have to take it out of service? or should all 2 pin adators mean the appliance should be class II?

thinking back on my post which I was about to edit, I should not have said test it as class II, as theres no indication it is a class II appliance

if the flex on the appliance is 2 core flex, then it's class II. you can't test as class I if there ain't no earth wire.

thats what I thought, but as class I it fails the earth bond test kit is brand new

a lot of this equipment is elv. supplied with a PSU built into the plug itself. all you can do with such items is a visual.

thanks so all 2 core adaptors mean the appiance gets tested as class II regardless of it not being marked? which going back to the book which says if no class II mark has to be tested as class I.

Its a bloo**y minefield.

If there is no earth wire you've got nothing to test the continuity of, so you can't test it as class 1.
Does this "adaptor" contain a transformer?

the adaptor starts as 2 pin 240v then ends up as jack plug 12v

Has it got markings stating Class B? Come across some things from USA and Canada that carry this marking

the adaptor is definately class B but the appliance ( CCTV PVR ) has no markings at all, just serial voltage and model !

The Code of Practice is just a guide, and a fairly general one at that. It does not, and can not, cover every eventuality. To do PAT properly you need to be competent. If you are competent then you should be able to assess the situation and be able to make an appropriate and informed decision when coming across new or unusual situations. Have a good think about what you are testing for. If you are unsure, then reread your course notes and make sure you understand what all of the tests for a class one and a class two item are for. Why they are done, the sequence in which they are done (and why in this particular sequence) and why the limits are set at particular values. Try to understand what you are doing. Proper PAT is about far more than just plugging in to a machine and pressing buttons.
I understand that you are not doing PAT as your main job, but even if just testing a few items a year you are taking on a responsibility that requires careful consideration. You did the right thing by coming on here seeking guidance. I admire that. A lot of people would not have the balls to admit they are unsure. I hope you end up with some clarity about the situation and can walk away at the end of the day satisfied that you have done a good and proper job.
