Hi,
Myself and a buddy of mine are both Industial sparks who are looking to start up an Electrical buisness. Both work in steel industry in South Wales and looking to start while still in employment, with the current cut backs Corus are making we both know its only a matter of time before we will be seeking alternative employment and want to get a headstart with something up and running so we can jump before we are pushed. We both got our 2391 insp. & testing and 17th Edition, Aswell as relevent Btecs & NVQS etc. Without a clue where to start, as in getting registered in testing, registered buisness, part-p, insurance?, website? etc. And any idea what sort of costs? Any advice would be greatly apprieciated!...

Cheers

Im in the same boat and looking at doing exactly what you are, you need to join a domestic installer scheme to keep things legal , try one of these three for starters email them with your questions they are all helpfull they all want your £500

Part P | Electricians | Building Regulations - NAPIT UK

Domestic Installer Scheme (Part P) - NICEIC Schemes - Approved contractor scheme - NICEIC Group

Welcome to ELECSA

Good luck with your venture hope you never look back, it will probably be the making of you, lot to be said for having a trade.

;)

I used a company called formations direct to set up company it costs about £60, then you should open a business account Alliance & Leicester do one thats free if you pay in £1000 each month £5 if you don't. With your qualifications you should be able to get the NICEIC approved contractor cost about £400 you have to have certain books ie regs, on site guide, etc they will tell you, also health and safety policy ( I downloaded fron net), public liability insurance (one man band costs £80).

Make sure you test and cert any jobs you do they will pick a couple and make sure they are all up to spec, they obviously will quiz you and make sure you know how to test properly.

It's not that difficult, just get all your paperwork in order.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice Richard, Who would you recommend out of the 3?. Also do you think there is is much call for PAT testing?

I wouldn't bother with PAT testing it numbs the brain, and you get people that do it for silly money .

elecsa or napit would be my choice, ive heard nic seem to make their own rules and regs up as they see fit
i trained in industry and went self employed 4 years ago, still do regular maintenance work for the firm i left as well as working as a subbie on commercial installs. i have just completed my eal domestic installer course and am getting ready for the 17th edition next week, hopefully when and if registered i will get an advert out and try to build my reputation up and hope some regular work comes in
