Hi, I am planning to install a 2 WAY CU in my garage that will feed 1 lighting point and 1 double socket. I am planning to feed the CU 2 in the garage from my CU in the house, from a B20 MCB using SWA 2.5mm. I want to know if I can take the SWA form the CU through the external wall and run it along the wall externally to the garage CU 2 . Is this ok. Any advice or a better alternative would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Derry0178.

Of course you can, just RCD the CU in the garage and put the 20A MCB on the unprotected side of the house cu, as your using swa and don't want to cause tripping caused by the shed.

personally I would use 6mm swa to the shed in case you add more sockets in the future or add a ring main or anything that will draw more than 20A

Why bother with the cu in the garage? just terminate into an rcd socket then on to a fused rcd spur to power the lights.......or put on an rcbo at the house and use bog standard accessories in the garage.........simples my flower.

Great point "not clever" but you can't rcbo the house and put a RCD socket in garage as its against regs, can't have 2 30ma RCDs in series, plus you won't need rcbo in house as its swa.
like you said RCD socket in garage but instead of FCU use the 1G RCD module instead to control the lights with a 5A fuse installed.

Wouldn't bother with an RCD for the lighting, more than likely going to be run in conduit or trunking and i'm certain it won't be getting plastered in.

Personally I cant believe this question is actually being asked, isn't this called "Electricians Forums"

Here we go. Derry is either newly qualified or almost there, better for him to ask a question if he's not 100% wouldn't you agree? Or do you think this place is just for patting each other on the back?
Cheers Trev, That last post was a bit off putting, Just gained my level 3 mate, but was unsure if I could run SWA Cable through the wall to the outside then run it externally along the gable end to the garage approximately 5-6 meters away, as It would be a nightmare to run cable under the floor, etc. result in an irate wife, with the nice wood flooring, etc. How high would the SWA have to be on the external wall? Or does it not matter. Want to get it right.

if you are feeding SWA through a wall, drill at an appropriate angle so that the SWA comes out of the wall without you having to make a tight bend. hope you can see what i mean. ( oh, and don't praise trev too much. he'll get big-headed. :44:)

Cheers Inselectric, Will run it out of reach, or as possibly high as I can get it. Cheers to everyone on this Forum, Great advice, encouragement and great people. My hat is off to all of you. Cheers Derry0178.
