Help: How to become qualified electrician through college or company?

Hi friends,

I would like to know if someone wants to be qualified electrician from the scratch by studying through a community college which takes at least 5 years or through a company such as "tradeskills4life" which takes shorter duration for a cost £8000 approximately . Does he get the same qualifications like NVQ3/City and Guilds at the end of the trainings?

Through the tradeskills4life do you have to pass the same stages as college, City and Guilds xxxx,xxxx....?

And what are pros and cons?

Plenty of threads on this one.... do a search of the forum.

One way costs less, teaches you properly, but takes longer.

The other is very quick, might just about teach you to pass an exam, is more expensive, and guarantees nothing in the way of experience.

Best way is to call a college and a fast track training centre and let them put their cases forward.... then make your own mind up.

You said that in October 2013 lol, anyway good luck with it.

You need to do your Level 2 to get the practical knowledge in the workshop. Level 3 is classroom based and should be done before the HNC imho.

You can study all you want but the Level 2 is a college/training center course based upon modular's that you pass throughout year. So no.

My advice would be to sign up to a 3 or 2 year (intensive course) and learn as much as you can. Fast track training (as said above) will teach you how to pass the exams. You also need time under your belt, hook up with an electrical firm for a couple of years at least.

When I started I was on 12.5 pence per hour (2'6D) in the early 70s , skilled guys then were on about £40 a week , gave my mum half of it , still managed to own a moped after a year or so ..

£2.73 minimum per hour + any overtime / bonuses for the first year & then whatever you minimum wage is for your age:



21+ = £6.50
18-20 = £5.13
Under 18 = 3.79
Apprentice = £2.73 (first year only)
