Help ideas on moving a main Incomer

Hi guys,

I have just picked up the keys to my new house, the Incomer is exposed under the stairs and looks a mess, I will be doing a gradual rewire as we revamp the house over time but firstly I will be sticking a new CU on.

Now if you look at the pics what would you guys do with this? I want it hiding or moving so my daughter can't get near it.

It is on an external wall, would it be possible to have it moved to an outside box? Or am I just going to have to squash it all together as best I can then box in?

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Of there are holes in the cutout which could present a danger to your daughter if she touches it then call the DNO and they will replace the cutout with one that is not dangerous.

However if the cutout is intact and in good condition then it will not present a danger.

I will have a close look, but tbh I wouldn't like her getting anywhere near it just incase she decides to give it a drink or something haha

Going by the size of the incoming it looks like a new(ish) concentric. The head is a bit strange though, has this been multiple occupancy before?

I’d have no qualms about moving it myself. No need to remake it off if there’s room to loose the excess under the floor.

I thought this was in an under stairs cupboard?

Is your daughter in the habit of pouring liquids into electrical equipment? I'm curious as to whether you have removed everything electrical from her reach that is far more accessible then the head? There's far more chance of her getting to the TV, DVD player, electric heaters, table lamps, sockets, any appliance!

No it's just under the stairs and not in any cupboard. she can obviously get access to the things you listed but IMO as her dad I don't want her to have access to a live Incomer and CU if it can be helped. Is that not a sensible thing to do?

And no she is not in a habit of it but as kids are unpredictable i am trying to minimise any risk at all of her messing with something she shouldn't and anyway it looks a mess like I stated so would like to cover it up.

Only you can decide whether it is necessary or sensible or not.

As I understand them children are drawn to that which is deliberately hidden from them or they are not allowed to touch, whereas that which is not made interesting to it will not attract it.

In much the same way that the 13A childproof socket covers attract children to play with sockets more than a standard socket does.

I have decided that it is necessary and sensible hence the post and like I said it don't look to nice either [emoji106]

Just look how nice it is I may just put a clear box round it and have it as a feature!!

With the length on the cable it would be nice to get it moved up to the top left corner of the stairs then box in, is there no chance of them doing that for me?

Smity, contacted UKPN about this a few times. They asked us to run smooth, twin walled conduit from where the new location is, out the house through a trench 600 deep to the perimeter of the property so they could drop a new line in; said they won't move it!

1200 notes later it's done, looks lovely, but a fair bit dearer then a cupboard!

I did say I’d have no qualms about moving the head. I was trained by a DNO in live cable jointing.
I don’t recommend trying it yourself unless you are confident in your ability.

Sammy around these parts they will not let you do anything ,digging the trench laying pipe work ;they have to do it all at a large cost of course

I just had mine moved by scotish power we were taking down the wall it was mounted on so it needed to move 1m along to the next wall there was plenty of slack on the cable but as it was a lead paper insulated cable they wouldn't move it we had to dig a trench and put in conduit for them to run in a new cable they charged us around £700 for the pleasure they did supply all the materials for us and gave clear instructions on what they wanted done so other than a few hours digging and an empty wallet it was relatively straightforward

Moved mine from inside to outside last year. If you can locate the main incoming cable outside and move your meter closer so they have to shorten the cable then price isn't to bad. I found the cable, which was only about 100mm under the drive, put meter box in. Bloke from western power came round, checked it and went easy job so £160 plus VAT. If you shorten cable then the team that move the meter can do everything as only cutting cable and refitting meter, where it gets expensive is when they have to join the cable and a jointing team has to come out also. You then pay about £450 ish just to have cable jointed and X per metre for the cable.
