Can anyone Help identify this wiring? It is in a grey box about 6 inches by 4 inches. It has BT written on the outside cover. I think it has a phone line going in to it but this wiring is hard to trace as the wiring is contained in a sealed wooden conduit.

Thanks for any help.

the answer is that it is a bt junction box, the real question is why do you need to know and what do you want to achieve with the answer.

Thanks for the replies. Is a junction box for dividing a phone line into two? Apologies, my understanding is a bit basic.

I want to know what it is for two reasons. Firstly it is a mess, the work has been badly done and I want to either tidy it up or remove it.

Secondly I want to know if this box is before or after my master socket? Could this be the reason for slow broadband? Is there a way to check if these wires are live? As described to trace the wiring is not that easy in my house, it all seems to be hidden behind walls, wooden conduits or floorboards.

Thanks

usually these boxes are placed before any of the master phone outlets.

usually would use these to split say a 20pair line into its individual lines.

techincally its property of BT and you shouldn't be touching it

I opened the back door of an exchange once to be greeted by what I refer to as a 'gyppo'.

He was asking if he could take the telecoms cable to run the lighting on his mobile fairground!

this could also be used for you intercom system, if you read the labels that are written on the cables it might help you, if as i suspect the idents are not in english do not dispair i have the ability to most eastern european idents translated.
some simple thinking about the cables might assist you how many cables are there at the junction box (only the ones connected) and how many outlets are there.

If this junction box is before the master socket, will removing it improve my broadband speed? Could I install a single new wire running from the terminal where it enters the house to the master socket, without the signal having to run through this mess.

thanks
