Can anyone Help identify this wiring? It is in a grey box about 6 inches by 4 inches. It has BT written on the outside cover. I think it has a phone line going in to it but this wiring is hard to trace as the wiring is contained in a sealed wooden conduit.

Thanks for any help.

No, the line is delivered underground. I can see where the line comes into the house and there is a bt box there. However I have lost track of where the cable goes after that behind conduits and boards etc. On the next floor is the bt junction box shown in my photo and my bt master socket in another room. I cannot tell which one is first in line, again due to conduits etc. There are no other phone socket extensions in the house.

if you are in a single dwelling and the cable does not go anywhere else it would make sense to run a new cable from the funny shaped box wher it enters your property to your master point.
two ways of doing that 1 is to get bt to change the cabling and the other is to persuade a competent person to do it, phone cables run on 3 small wires so it isn't rocket science

aw, thats not fair, surely it is every home owners right,
i tried changing the light fitting i put all the reds together in that little plastic thing all the blacks in another seperate one and even the strippy ones but not it trips the fuse every time i switch the switch, not sure what has happened maybe the light i bought was too powerful.

Right so I definitely now know that this junction box is before my master socket. The question is will BT remove it for me and re-wire the system? How much does this cost?

Thanks,

if bt need to come out they will charge you but if you ask to email the picture to them and explain that it is physically before the master socket you may be able to get them to agree to a no cost visit prior to them coming out
but - don't hold your breath
first you need to call them and find someone who has clue how email works
