just read a funny thread on screwfix community. Person posted a question 'lights have gone out very strange'.

Some of the responses are so funny. They would be annihilated if they were on here.

'Your house is probably wired in MI, Dropped a pot, can't be repaired, you'll need a full rewire costing ÂŁ4k.'

All diagnosed from the end of a PC!

Anyway, I just thought I'd share this before I go off to work.

Covered MICC on my DI course, and did as Paul.M did, I grabbed a few metres and borrowed the tools for the night and completed 25 or so ends. Only lost on when I did an IR test the following morning..........

Yes the course was mainly aimed at T&E, but did cover other cable types. As with everything, once you learn something hands on is the only way to learn and master. I believe in getting it right first then work on speed later.........

If any are practicing

Here's my tips

Fill the pot from one end only with the compound,it expels the air as it is filled, making moisture difficult to become trapped and messing up the IR values

Tuggung the cores with a pliers before sliding on the spacer,so as not to have a kink of conductor in the pot

Always remembering to slide the shroud on before gland and potting ( thats the "oh sh-t" moment if you have done so :) )

If your glanding into a pump or other such contraption, then make a loop of pyro before it enters, looks nice and there's spare if it had to be remade

If you dont have the proper tools,a pair of side cutters can replace the stripping tool,a pair of pliers can replace the ringing tool

I would suggest a vice,a hammer and a screwdriver to replace the crimper, but thats getting really cowboy so i wont :)

Great advice Des but you forgot the one vital thing, a piece of 2" x 1" cut just short of the distance between clips and a nice little toffee hammer for the dressing ..................loved MICC

Oh and you right handed people never invented a stripping tool for left handers, so it was always side cutters.

Pet hate with MICC was the lazy option at a DB. Where instead of doing long tails, you would find the pot and about 10" of the MICC poked into it ......hated that.

Hi Des, re using side cutters - bit of a daft question but do you cut the cladding from the end of the cable down to the mark in a straight line? Being left handed it's cutters for me! Cheers, SW

i find long nose pliers are as good as side cutters and also use small set of adjustable pipe cutters to get a nice finish and find the pot goes on easier as well, did alot of micc when i was installing fire alarms.

also came across a mansion type house that was wired in the stuff, must have took them months to do the job, was ok untill the customer wanted flush sockets fitting, couldn't do it as were the nuts held the pots into the back boxes, there wasn't enough clearance for the sockets to sit flush, just something to look out for if you come ascross the situation.

If I understand you correctly,no you dont cut in a straight line

You need to mimic the operation of the stripping tool,ie you turn the copper with the cutters at an angle around the cable, but stripping much bigger width off than a stripping tool

Its the type of tool use that some will adapt to very easily, others may never get to grips with the technique
As with most things ,its practice that gets you there in the end

Once it is mastered,it can sometimes be done quicker than a stripping tool
