Help needed, something I've dug up in the garden....

hello, just needed some advice really, i'm not an electrician but just wanted to find out what this was and whether it is safe to dig it up. the top of thepole was just below the surface of the ground and it seems to be concreted in hard. it's about a foot long i guess, i'd like to dig it up and get rid of it, i'll need to hire a jack-hammer or something to get it out as its stuck fast, but i'm wondering if it's safe to do so, my initial thought is it's some kind of earthing (?) and wouldn't be "live" as such or connected to any wiring under the ground but as i'm no electrical expert i'm probably wrong, anyway here are the pics, thanks in advance....

Lumb Lane...Ive not been there in years...the last time I was down there, it only cost me a scuba diver for the lot...lol. Now its costing me a fortune with the same lass.lol

well just to get it back on track...it was all about something that got dug up in a garden....now thats exposure that is.....could be indecent.....

Funniest thing I've seen dug up was a 2 inch mortar round, made its way into the rock crusher and made a very nice clanging sound, didn't go bang though, most boring. Should have seen people run... :lol:

well its just as well you turned up when you did....or i could have envisaged me borrowing the neighbours `strima` to clear that garden.....

No, your service head is, in most cases a big black box, that will feed your metre. It will normally have 2 grey cables and a green/yellow (like the one on the earth rod) coming out of it, too your metre.

okay so i finally uploaded the pics, i managed to get a sneaky pic of the neighbour's meter as well, mine is the top picture his is the bottom one, these were the only black boxes i could see in there anyway apart from the meter, hope this helps

oh right, does this mean the wiring in the house is safe and the earth pole in the garden is redundant, or should i still get it checked out anyway?

As long as the other flats have a similar setup (with the earth coming out of the service head) and your neighbours have the same then its fine to dig up - its probably from when they built your house or a neighbours house in the first place.

Little hint these are at least 1 meter long usually 2 meters long (if 2 joined togeather.

If you cant pull it out get a digger - tie a rope around it and pull it up - or dig around it and cut the top off with a grinder or hacksaw then berry it again.

With this system its fine Skewiff - if your flat has not had its electric checked in 5 years then its worth getting it checked anyway

Not necessarily i have seen this before and found it was TN-S (when the fuse carrier fell out and the cover over the neutral fell off!)
