Hi Guys,

Just want someone to confirm the correct way.

I am going to replace bathroom light, however the wiring is the old wiring of RED & BLACK and the new light is new wiring BLUE & BROWN.

The current ceiling rose as wired as follows.

RED wire to light connector, BLACK, BLACK, RED, RED.

Then on the other side of the ceiling rose you have, BLACK, RED & BLACK to the light connector

So, the blacks are both neutral so will go to Blue on the new light.
The RED are live so go to BROWN on the new light.

Which colours on the switch return, go where?

tak a picture and post it why well even your phone will have a camera and there is 3 ways to wire lights in a house 1 via the light switches 2 via a central joint box and 3 via the light point

Take switch apart and have a look! essentially it doesnt matter if you get the switch return round the wrong way if its in a bathroom pull cord switch as it will work exactly the same!

left hand side 2 connection points is neutral, middle is you loop 3 connection points and is in red, and the other side is your switched live from switch...

ps. is this switching another light aswell??? 2 lights one sw2itch

i think, if you have tester you can be certain by belling them out..

looking at that pic., from left to right , i would say left is switched L. middle is deffo. loop L. right is N. the light itself has been fitted the wrong way round, IMO.

Ok that a lot better the black on the left is actualy a live (switchwire) cable you should put a bit of insulation tape on it to differentiate it from other cables the 3 reds in the middle are constantly live and the 2 black on the right are the neutrals.

It looks like the existing light red cable is connected to the 2 blacks and the light black cable connected to the single black it should have been the red to the single black and the black to the 2 blacks

NOW BE ADVISED ELECTRICITY KILLS so if you are not sure then get someone in but before anything is done the power needs to be switched off then
1. Disconnect the existing light fitting
2. Remember to mark the single black as this will connect to the brown of the new light fitting
3. the 3 reds need to be joined in there own connector block they have nothing to do with the new light fitting.
4. the 2 blacks connect to the blue of the new light fitting
5. all the earth cables need to be connected to the earth of the new light fitting.

AGAIN BE WARNED IF YOUR ARE NOT EVEN SUR THEN JUST DONT DO IT

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

He asked what colours on the switch return go where did he not? And it wouldnt make a difference on a pull cord only a plate switch where the off/on positions may be reversed.
You seemed to answer a question he hadn't asked.

@oldtimer - Thanks for your response, really helpful.

Can i ask why the 3 reds need to be joined together and kept seperatly from the new fitting as apposed to be connected to neutral?

So just to get this right.

3 reds kept seperately, black to neutral blue on new light.

Black (Switch live) goes to brown.

Earth to Earth.

Does the new light not need to have a red to brown to provide it with the power it needs?

Its a one way switch by the way

Apologies I assumed the op was an electrician, I thought everyone on here were electricians.

The reds are kept seperate as there are just loop feeds to the next/ precious fittings. Therefore are permanently live!

Sorry, just looking for help, just a bit confused at what provides the bathroom light with "power" if the 3 reds are just kept seperately.

No probs. one red will be the feed down to the switch, and the black (sleeved) will be the return switch wire to the live fees of the light, this will become live when the switch is operated.

Power off ! The switch wires will be the ones that go low resistance when the switch is turned on and go open circuit when its off.
