As I said ther is 3 ways that I know how lights are wired you have a loop in loop out so a cable leaves the fuseboard then loops in and out of each light point with the cable from the switch being wired in as well hence why you have 3 cables 3 reds 3 blacks 3 earths so you have the 3 reds one from the fuseboard one from the switch and one going to the next light the 3 blacks is one from the fuseboard one going to the next light and here is the rub one going black to the switch hence why you need to flag or ID this cable because when you take it down you will get mixed up. Also I have lost count on the number of people who switch the power off put all 3 blacks and all 3 reds together and connect the light up if the switch is off and the power is put back on then the light works ok the problem you get is when you flick the switch you get an almighty BANG Here endith the lesson

well, it's one way of testing the fuse/MCB.

I had a guy who showed me this happening 2 times and it woud have been 3 times if I did not stop him switching the light off then resetting the breaker to show me the problem again. The thing is I have always flagged the black from the switch yes I know we now have sleeving but in the real world lucky is that they used earth sleeving and when I put a light up for someone they always ask why do you put a bit of tape around that cable.

If I were you OP I'd do the clever thing and get an electrician out. It'll be a lot quicker, easier and safer than faffing around with something you know nothing about and which could at worst kill you and your family, and it'll probably not cost you very much.
I appreciate your willingness to have a go but would you be so willing to repipe the gas supply to your central heating boiler?

If the OP could DM you with that info? Rough area is fine, but don’t post your full address in public, obviously.

Power off ! The switch wires will be the ones that go low resistance when the switch is turned on and go open circuit when its off.
