roboze

While wiring a new build lounge, i happilly marked out where the downlights were going, then proceeded to drill my cable route, keeping in mind to stay clear of the downlights, upon finishing i realised to my horror i have drilled a row of 20mm holes almost in the middle of the span of the joists, not within the 25-40% zones, i was aware of these Regs was simply on auto pilot, any advice please ( the joists are 9 inch floor joists.)

Cheers

Rob

unless you get a complete jobsworth of a building inspector, you should be OK. what's 20mm in 9"? you couls fill 'em with chewing gum.

I know what you have done is at odds with the guidance in the building regs, but,I agree totally with telectrixs comments

I've seen rewired joists after plumbers have been notching away like there was no tomorrow, where concrete blocks could be used to cover the pipes (and whole ones at that)

The joists are now drilled, end of.
Unless he is an obvious jobsworth,it wont matter one bit
See the builder to get the boards up before he can make comment, thats presuming that he is even aware of the distances in the first place, which I have my doubts

many sparkies have been drilling holes all over the place for donkies years and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems, on a rewire you would drill where the hell you can.
having said that I once had to rewire the downstairs power / lighting and the first floor power as I had made the same cockup.

Good luck, especially with the cost of todays cable

thanks for you help chaps,

i figured it wasnt going to massively weaken the joist, think i`ll point it out to the builder and let him decide what he wants to to do.
Just spoke to someone who has done this before, and the inspector called for an engineers report.
apparantly the engineer turned up and told the inspector to stop wasting his time.
still cost £400 though. eek!!

dont worry about it, by the time the inspector comes, the boards will be up. or if you want to do things perfectly, drill the holes again, but i wouldnt bother

If you're that bothered, take your finger, put a bit of grime on it, rub said grime into the drilled holes and voila! It was like that when I got 'ere, guv.

lol yeah i probably am worrying to much, but i just know i`ll get a little hitler of an inspector!! gonna keep a bit of wood close by so i can keep touching it.....not that i`m supersticious or anything!!

if you really can be bothered or feel you should get a load of saw dust from same timber and mix with wood glue slap it in the when glue dries it goes clear just leaving the saw dust colour that will do it .or blame the plumber they are all aminals when it comes to holes in bits of wood
