I HAVE JUST STARTED A NEW JOB AS A TESTER FOR AN INSURANCE COMPANY, I HAVE MY 2391 AND MY 17TH EDITION, AND COMPLETED MY APPRENTICESHIP, ALTHOUGH I THINK IM CAPABLE OF DOING ALL TESTS ON NEW INSTALLATIONS IM FINDING IT HARD TO TEST EXISTING PROPERTIES BECAUSE OF THE FAULTS I HAVE BEEN HAVING!! I HAVE FAILED 2 TODAY AS I COULDNT GET ACCESS TO ONE C/U AND WHEN I VISUALLY INSPECTED THE PROPERTY THERE WAS NO CPC ON LIGHTING AND SPURS ALL OVER THE PLACE ON THE RING MAIN. ALSO MY Ze AND Zs READINGS WERE TOO HIGH ON THE OTHER ONE!! I WAS JUST WONDERING AM I DOING THE RIGHT THING IN FAILING THEM BECAUSE ITS MY NAME ON THE CERT AT THE END OF THE DAY? MY JOB DETAILS FROM THIS COMPANY ARE JUST TO TEST - NOT TO RECTIFY! AS ONLY THE AFFECTED AREA OF FLOODS ETC IS THEIR CONCERN, ALSO THEY HAVE ME RECORDING MY RESULTS ON A MINOR WORKS CERTIFICATE WHERE I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE A PERIODIC INSPECTION REPORT!!

ALSO I DONT THINK THIS COMPANY IS REGISTERED WITH NIC OR ANYTHING SO CAN THEY ACTUALLY GIVE OUT CERTIFICATES?? I ONLY HAVE MY 2391!

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS AND ANY ADVICE WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED!!

i guess it`s only you who knows if you feel competent to be doing periodic s mate. it`s either satisfactory or un satisfactory and the deviations will be listed. they don`t have to be a member of the niceic to issue reports mate. anyone who is competent can issue a cert. as long as you code it right and list the deviations. don`t forget it`s your name on the cert afterall

Hi

I agree with last posts you should do a PIR, minor works only used for additions and alterations to existing circuits.
If you have a copy of reg book read section with model forms it has notes on what each certificate is used for.

Also as said before its your name on the cert, or to quote our Select inspector, the buck stops at you and its you who could be in the dock of the local courts!!!!. so make sure certs are filled in and dont leave any sections with nothing in them, if it does not apply mark it N/A, i have been pulled up for this in the past by Select on there inspection visits to our company

Thank I'm hoping it's just the 1st few weeks getting in to it. I'm trying to cover my ---! I knew it had to be a periodic!! Can u do a periodic on certain circuits tho or does it have to be the whole installation? And can I ask if my ze is too high does it have any change on the maximum ze allowed or is it still the tables in the regs?? ( this is for a tt installation! Thanks alot for ur help! Sorry bout the caps aswell

The company see they get all their electricians to do minor works. Which i though was wrong! Iv wrote fail on the 2 minor works certs iv dun but the insurance company won't sort the problems because it's not peril related! Could anything come back on me even tho I failed it

oh rite, well im noting down on the minor works cert that its failing, and im writing down on the paperwork i give back that its failing, all im writing is that the property has failed the tests but that it is not due to the peril! i cant really think how else i can cover it wen they are giving me minor works to fill in! i know its wrong but how else can i go about it?? thank you by the way

Yes you can do a PIR on certain circuits if you wish but this has to be noted on the limitation section on the PIR.

I think that you need to obtain the correct PIR certs for the work that you are doing as filling in a MWC means naff all.

Ze value should be below 200 ohms on a TT as anything above is deemed unstable.

ye i didnt think that the minor works would mean anything, well on this tt installation the ze is 4.26 ohms, but my zs on the sockets is 4.81? is this acceptable, i thought you just go off the tables in the regs but my friend is telling me this zs might be ok because of the ze being a tt result

On a TT installation socket outlets must have additional protection by 30mA RCD this means that the maximum permissable Zs is 1667 ohms table 41.5 page 50. So your Zs is acceptible.

This is pretty basic stuff that persons carrying out PIR's should be up to scratch with.

The coding part is all down to experience and knowing whether something is right or wrong. Remember some pics have no faults.
