Good Afternoon everyone,

Now me and the mrs have done some digging around the net and found a course to assist me in my career change.

Electrical Courses | 7 Week Electrician Training | RFTraining.co.uk

Now someone on my welcome post that to become qualified i need 2330 and 2357 plus 17th edition.

Now, that course above covers :-

City & Guilds (2382) – 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (Level 3)

Logic Full Scope Electrical Part P Scheme

City & Guilds (2392) Certificate in Fundamental Inspection and Testing and Initial Verification

Logic Certification Domestic Periodic Inspection and Testing Award

That course your looking at is what is known as a Domestic Installers course and there are pages and pages of discussion on here about them.

The 2330 which is soon to become the 2357 is the more recognised course and IMO a better way to go with training, though I believe it is day realise over a 2 -3 year period. This will eventually get you the recognistion as an Electrician, the other will just get you the title of Domestic Installer.

Then IMO it would be the new 2357 ....................... but I'm sure you will get other views on this as it is quite an emotive subject. The majority of "Time Served" Electricians completely decry the 7 week intensive course, for various reasons, and in your circumstances of, I'am assuming, no previous experience in the industry IMO it will not give you a good enough grounding in the basics of electrical work.

The guy to really give you a non partisan opinion is Widdler who is associated with training much more than I. Welcome anyway to the Forum, good luck in what you choose to do.

I totally understand and agree.

The only issue is that it is something i tried to get into when i left school but there was nothing around for me because I failed my GCSE's as I was in hospital for 6 months so would have had to re-sit so i ended up in the steel trade for a couple of years.

I am in a position to pay for the 7 week course to get me into the trade.

I am more than happy to be a right hand man to learn the ropes on site as it were.

I've got no issues with being "apprentice" to an experienced chap

These centre's are ok if you are looking to collect all the short courses and then work with limitations to your scope. If you plan on obtaining the recognised papers to be accepted by future employers, particularly in the commercial sector then this is not for you. As malcolmsanford has mentioned, you want to be looking to obtain the 2330 or 2357 qualification.

If attending three years of college isn't really preffered then some centres do offer this qualification with intense style delivery so it may be worth contacting them for further details??

Electrician Course | BTSC - Trade Skills Centres

I myself cannot vouch for this centre as I have not worked with them before, you can find some blogs and stuff about them.

for commercial work and domestic..

Alot of us don't like the domestic installer route. The reason being it really does put the years of training alot of us took, down. You will be able to complete the qualifications in a short period of time with little experience and be able to go and work in people homes. The problem is you will be effectively learning on their property. I am not saying you will do a bad job. But experience is vital in this trade and the 2330/2357 over 3 years plus 2382 and 2391 will allow you to have some credit within the trade. The 2330/2357 is the tech cert which really does establish you as a spark.

Cheers.

I honestly can say that I would like to do the 7 weeker but then use this to allow me to learn on the job with a company.

Listen Lee, the ways things are you will find it very tough to walk into a job. The best route for instant money is the domestic installers scheme. We all know this. It just really bugs me and alot of others that this can happen. the market is getting flooded with electricians and domestic sparks will be on minimum wage the way its going!

if u serious then do it right ,go the city and guilds route ,,goto college ,,don't goto to cannock though(course is at rodbaston) ,goto to the main south staffs faculty at tamworth ,,i learned more at tamworth college in 2 weeks than i did at cannock in 2 years ,,half the time at cannock we never had a tutor and taught ourselves ,it was terrible ...still passed 2330 level 2 though, through lots of home study ..now doing my level3 at tamworth ,only cost ÂŁ959

level 2 is free but u will have to pay for level 3 ,if u are lucky enough u may be able to get on an adult apprenticship,,

get prepared for lots of maths and brainache .well worth the effort though

The 2330/2357 level 2 is one year 2 days a week or 2 years at 1 day a week + 1 year for the level 3 at 1 day a week.

After you've completed the domestic course that you have listed you will find it near on impossible to gain employment in commercial.

Without getting into a big argument about which course is best, what your looking at doing is good for people with a background in the construction industry. Anybody without any experience will find it very hard once qualified to lift floorboards or chase out etc. It may seem daft of me saying this but have you ever seen someone that doesn't know what a bolster hammer is?

This course is just the beginning, you will have to do other courses afterwards if you want to expand away from domestic. Good luck to you and if you get stuck post up a question.

Cheers.

I honestly can say that I would like to do the 7 weeker but then use this to allow me to learn on the job with a company.

If you do decide to commit to a seven week block style course, my best advise to you would be to work out the price of the qualifications you will walk away with (I mean proper qualifications) in comparison with doing them individually... for example I am working at a place where guys pay upwards of 4.5k for '6 weeks intensive training', but all they walk away with is 2377, 2382-10, 2393, 2392 & 2391 with about 12 days of installation experience and theory thrown in.

Make sure you do your research.
