Good Afternoon everyone,

Now me and the mrs have done some digging around the net and found a course to assist me in my career change.

Electrical Courses | 7 Week Electrician Training | RFTraining.co.uk

Now someone on my welcome post that to become qualified i need 2330 and 2357 plus 17th edition.

Now, that course above covers :-

City & Guilds (2382) – 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (Level 3)

Logic Full Scope Electrical Part P Scheme

City & Guilds (2392) Certificate in Fundamental Inspection and Testing and Initial Verification

Logic Certification Domestic Periodic Inspection and Testing Award

Im confused.com

I will have to look into it further then because my idea is not to do the course then say im qualified etc.

I want to use it to get my foot into the door so i can begin learning on site etc

Lee you do whats right for yourself. You don't want to be looking a pillock infront of your customers if things go ---- up and you don't know what to do though. Thats why experience is essential. Just make sure you are happy with your competency before you start trading.

Those courses/qualifications are unlikely to open any doors for you I'm afraid, they're just very basic and 'anyone' can do them.
A prospective employer won't take much notice of them and employers are bombarded nowadays with CV's from people with higher grades and experience to match.
If you want to start and run your own domestic business then these might give a bit of help but they're not really for industrial or commercial.

The domestic trade is going to go ---- up I can see it. next 10 years there will be that many domestic sparks. the rate will be £1500 per re-wire on a 3 bed semi.

The courses need to be stopped

I maybe a little different to "office boy" who wants a change in career.

I am willing to be the site bitch but i would like a foundation to build on.

If you want to spunk your money up against the wall dude, then be my guest. You won't get a job at the end of it, domestic, commercial or otherwise. My advice (for what it's worth cos no-one listens to me anyway!) is keep on doing what you're doing, buy a good book or two and keep on reading the forum, and WAIT until things pick up, then try and get a start as a MATE. This is where you WILL LEARN, and build on what you have READ. Then get yourself to college one day a week.

THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS. Sorry to rain on your parade, but that few grand that is burning a hole in your pocket should be in a nice ISA, waiting to fund the RIGHT course at the RIGHT time.

Kind and heartfelt regards.

All the best. Think about it.

I will do.

I'll take a step back i think and research more

I have applied for 2 adult apprenticeships but they are £95 per week which aint going to cover a mortgage so I will have to look into things more

look into somethink else feller construction has gone to the dogs,,,u missed the boat weve all had it good for number years now the boat is on the rocks and sinking,,money crap hours crap quality of work and jobs crap,,,,,did i say crap if you still want to do electrics do short course blagg it be really cheap change name to limpiski and you be busy for years,,,

I do have a mate in the commercial side so ill speak to him aswell.

It is something i want to do and as long as i can earn enough to feed us Im happy

your only choice really if u still want a wage is to goto college at night and have a day job...

have u a link to the apprentiship place ,,i struggled to find anywhere

I think some people miss the trick here. I hate the fast track route with a passion. But lets be honest if you want to get into the game quick and you ahve no tech certs thats what anyone would do.

Comments about the industry being down etc is true but its not totally broken there are loads of companies rakeing in the work....why? because they have sat up and attacked the market. those who sit back and dwell will lose out. Sparks are alwyas needed. Its just about marketing your company!!

Hi CannockLee,
I like yourself was looking for a complete career change, I started training in May 2009to become what I believed was a proffessional electricians course which a company which went ---- up, but thats another thread. Usual short courses which we all know are. Wish I'd found this site before pouring 5.5k down the drain as with these courses alone you'll get sod all work, believe me i've passed my 2392 and preparing for my 2391 and cant get any work even offering free labour.
Its got to the stage where i've decieded to go back to college in sept to do the new 2357, because without i've got no chance of getting that foot in the door. Not trying to put a dampner on your decision, but do it properly it'll take 2 years but at least youll get the recongnition for your hard work.

A sad story, but one with valuable lessons for all 'cranocklee's' out there. LISTEN UP FOLKS.

An interesting take on things, but a decision to drastically jump ship from a steady job that pays the mortgage in the current climate is not one to be taken lightly (or at all!) These courses promise a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I'm sure that (from recent threads) that people in unrewarding, but steady jobs think that they can do a short course and then suddenly the clouds part and the sun starts to shine. The phone never stops ringing with endless easy and lucrative jobs where they turn up at some lovely person's house and hold their hand while talking soothingly about their electrics and drinking a cup of tea, at the end of which they go on their way with a huge check.

WHERE OR WHERE does this come from.

I don't work on the domestic side of things and reading threads on this forum only confirms my gladness not to do so.

I think a thread from experienced sparkies (gonna start one next) about the REALITY of running a domestic electrical business and ALL it entails is needed.

Dommies, I take my hat off to you.

Alright Voltz, its not a sad story, its a silly decision which I've learnt from and taken a plus from because the courses have shown me that I've enjoyed what i've studied so far, and has made me more determined to succeed. Yes its an expensive mistake but still got plenty of miles in the tank to hopefully turn my loss into a profit. Just a p**ser to think if i'd done it properly i'd have a year left to go.
