No longer true ,you have to hold a 2377 certificate , Portable appliance testing now includes fixed appliances there for you need to be qualified to disconnect and reconnect the appliance ,

What drivel. Care to point us towards where you picked that little gem up?
It may be a requirement from certain employers or insurance companies, but no more than that.

And in any case, passing C&G 2377 will not qualify anyone as competent to perform safe isolation, disconnection and re-connection of fixed appliances.

Nice one lads, i bet his confidence is sky high after that onslaught. I know some damn good electricians who have failed this exam. I would recommend that before opening your gobs, if you haven't taken it recently, then have a go.

Cheers...........Howard
That's assuming he's coming back to read it.

I was quite taken aback by the quote on PAT course having the requirement to disconnect and test then reconnect fixed systems.
Wasn't on my course (nuff said it was 4 years ago).
We were told that if it's fixed then get a qualified lecky to check it.

I thought this thread had been abandoned weeks ago....
Yes, there is a big skill difference between unplugging an appliance (which anyone can do even without 2 days training) and safely isolating and disconnecting part of an electrical installation, which should be done by a 'competent person' which the JIB deems to be an electrician, ie someone with an NVQ3.
So if it has a plug on it you can do a 2 day course, if it's wired into a FCU you'll need a 3 year technical certificate then another year NVQ3. This is why you'll hear so many people arguing that wiring something into a FCU voids the need for testing.
