I have a 8.0 kw shower, it will be screwed to the wall over the bath with a 6mm2 cable to it via a pull cord switch, do I need RCD protection for it? and do I need to replace the Wylex fuse carrier with a MCB? a friend of mine from the pub suggests not, I have told him I have read here it needs to be a 16mm2 cable with a 50 amp MCB protecting the cable, we had a big argument, is he right? Also what does Main equipotential bonding mean?, Is he pulling my leg? thanks again fellow electricians, oh and obviously Part P and 17th edition as well as pat testing qualifications are required to install. I have just passed my 2397.6 exam and have my white "electric safe" card so I am qualified.

Cheers.

Nah mate that part p thingy is a load of bowlocks, just find some of that old red'n'black wire, the skinnier the better, then it is easier to work with.

In fact I heard from my mate in the boozer, he is a builder who knows a bit about lecky, that you can run it off of the light. then if the fuse blows just wrap a bit more wire around it.

This lecky marlarkey a piece of pXss, there is only 3 wires, what can go wrong ?

I have heard adding a JB to the shower cabling is benificial, apparently according to some of the guys here you can add a bathroom extract fan to the JB and all is fine.

Dont worry about the JB mate, just make sure you use 1.0mm t+e for the shower and fan as it's easier to squeeze them all in to the socket terminals.

its true mate my cabinet light and shaver socket is run off of mine, in fact I added a socket to mine above the bath (of course) for our lasses hairdryer as well.

You can't use them wylex fuse boards any more they are highly dangerous and will burn your house down you nead to fit an explosive proof one to comply with the 18th addition regsv

Yeah mate lots of tape, for the water init ?

I had one of them RCD trip thingys as well, but it must have been faulty cos it wouldn't stay up, I linked it out and everything has been hunky dory since.

you have to get the right trade for the job. in this case, a shower involves water, which, as any geordie who's had more than 1 bath in any one year, will tell you that water is injurious to your health. therefore you need a qualified registered plumber. make sure that the shower unit is clearly labelled with "top" on the topmost part.
