I’ve got the following setup on the stairway (picture included)

My guess is it’s for the stairway light.

The setup is: 2 red wires twisted together 2 black wires independent from each other 2 earth wires twisted together

I expected the 2 black wires to be connected and my plan is to add a bulb, but now I’m confused.

Does anyone know of any wiring diagrams to explain this or an idea of how to test?

It is likely the two red, and earth, each stay together (E + Red separate!) and the remaining two wires are your Neutral and switched Live. This would need to be confirmed with test equipment. I would say DONT put them together or you will be in the Big Bang method of wiring system.

as post #2 above.
but I took you to mean these (the two black wires) are the two wires you are thinking of connecting the bulb across (ignoring completely the reds), which is exactly what I would try.
I assume you don't mean you want to connect the blacks together, which is not a good idea!

End of circuit on a loop-in (3 plate) system.

One red/black is the live and neutral coming from mains… other red/ black is live and switched live.

Looking at the image, the reds need to be put into a connector, but not electrically to anything on the light fitting.

The blacks are for the L and N of the fitting… but the insulation needs to be stripped off the end a little before putting into the terminal.
Not just screwed through the insulation like that on the pic.

Big warning.

If the power is on at your main fuse board / consumer unit, then the reds there will be live….. even if the local switch is turned off.
