I'd be very grateful for any help any of you experts can give me please. I have bought a Siemens combination microwave oven to replace a Miele combination microwave oven. When the guy came to fit it today, he left a message saying he would not fit it because it could not be fitted to a 13 amp spur/plug and had to be fitted on a separate circuit. The previous combination microwave oven had been fitted in the same place to the same electrical fitting before. Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine problem and if so what it is based on? It is for a 90 year old man to use and I don't want him to have to wait around if it is not necessary.
Thanks

What does the rating plate on the new oven say? In particular the input power rating in watts (W). It's most likely on the rear face. A photo of the plate or label would be good. This info should also be in the user manual.

If it's a normal domestic model I'd be surprised if it couldn't be plugged in.

It's too heavy for me to get out of its box but I checked on the Internet and it is 1000w which is the same as the one coming out. I thought there must be some new regulation.. Thanks very much

simple way to be sure. does the oven have a plug top fitted. ? if so just plug it in. also, manufacturer's instructions will be there to follow.

just looked at the spec. it's 3.6kW and requires it's own dedicated, hard wired circuit, so your man was correct. where did you get the 1000w from?

Thanks very much. I'm not sure what that is. What I have at the moment is a box with a switch, so instead of being plugged in with a 3 pin plug it is permanently wired in to a box which I can turn on or off. It is the same system for all the kitchen electrical equipment. I see from the document left with the fuse box when it was installed about 9 years ago (when the whole house was rewired) that it says the kitchen ring main is 32A. There are separate fuses for the main oven and hob. I have always had a combination microwave of 1000w attached without any problems and all I'm trying to do is to slot one out and the other in. Thanks again

I looked at the spec online and a few lines down from 3.6 KW it says 1000w. Sorry, I didn't understand the difference, but now I see that is the microwave oven output. Is this an unusual requirement? It is replacing a Miele BM4080 which is at least as powerful (or was until the elderly man destroyed it!) Is it dangerous to have it connected as it was before, and is it a big job having a new hard wired circuit installed? The kitchen is nowhere near the main fuse box. Thanks for all your help.

well, that 3.6kW is 15A, but that would be with everything on. if you were to wire it into the ring final, it would work. problem is going to be if any other large loads are in use at the same time. you would have problems with 1. MCB tripping. 2. possible overload of the ring final circuit. there's no easy answer to this- connecting into thee ring final is bad practice and BS7671 recommends any appliance over 2.2kW be on it's own dedicated circuit. time to get a quote for this to be installed.

not a reg. as such. in BRB, it's appendix 15 (p362). 1.ring final circuit arrangements. (iii)

Thank you all very much, I really appreciate your help. It looks as though it would need a new circuit, which is really tricky because the walls are all solid and the main fusebox is on a different floor at the other end of the house, so I am going to return the cooker and see if I can find one which will be OK and which also has buttons easy enough for the elderly man to use. Not easy! Thanks again.
