right this is a strange on there are gu10 lamps fitted at present on a 40watt dimmer switch so i changed lamps over to the newlwc high powerd led ones wich are 3x2watt did it with 2 wich worked fine but when i changed all 4 over it blew 2 lamps up and also blew up the40watt dimmer swich wich semas strange as these are direct replacment for the gu10 and only 6 watt each so should work fine on a 400watt dimmer switch and semas strange that the lamps also blew up on me and the lamps are not cheap either the retail at ÂŁ65.00 each

first, are the LED lamps dimmable. second, is the dimmer suitable for LED lamps. both need addressing , preferably before powering up and destroying equipment.

yes they are dimmable as the voltage range is between 85-264volts aint to sure on the dimmer swithc but worked fine with 2 lamps instuled on it dimmed fine but whil would it blow up the lamps

Sounds more like they are universal input with a proper switching regulator built in, so NOT dimmable unless the instructions specifically say so.

I agree, dimmers don't reduce the voltage as such, they clip the waveform reducing it's RMS value (Pulse Width Modulation). With some dimmers the peak output voltage might be higher than the incoming supply voltage Consult the LED supplier, some LED's are dimmable, some not. Some require specifically a leading or trailing edge dimmer. It's all down to the driver circuitry in the lamp itself. The supplier will be able to recommend a dimmer they know will work with that particular lamp assuming it's dimmable.

The two points to address as stated are if the dimmer is suitable for LED use, and are the LEDs suitable for dimming?

If the voltage range is 80-250v, that is the voltage range and not if it is dimmable, A fluorescent fitting generally has a voltage range of 100-250v but is not dimmable. The lamp should preform consistently through the voltage range.

Regardless of how the dimmer works, it too has a wattage rating if 400W is the upper limit is is likely that the lower limit is 250W. Your four LED fittings (regardless of dimmability) are no where near 250w. even with only two lamps led and two gu10 the dimmer will have blown, just not quite as quickly.

@ÂŁ65 a pop prehaps you'll think about what you are doing next time, or maybe call a qualified electrician in.

i am a fully qulifield electrician and have been for many years ive also asked a few other qulifield electrician that i no and none of them could help me out now found out that i need a triac dimmer with comments like that i would think twice again about asking a question on here there aint a single electrican i no out there that nos every think there is to on about electrical work but i sopose your one of then big headed ones that do!!!!!

You are right no one knows everything. Am I alone in thinking a lot of people on here assume everyone who asks a question is now a numpty DIY er who knows nothing when they are not.
You have learnt the hard way on this one. I am sure we have all learnt somthing the hard way at some time and i am pleased you have got it sorted.

Very sorry rich, If you are qualified then fair play, And i'm sorry if i've given you a poor impression of the forums, however the questions posed more specifically the notion of Blowing things up are not ones that generally come from a qualified bod. Contrary to your notions I'm not one of the big headed ones that does know it all but the points raised are in my opinion school boy errors, Glad you've got it sorted, and i'll keep my mouth shut next time!

lets just clear a few things up i was told the lamps were dimmable when i bought them and have been back to my suppliers since and have had the ones that blew on me replaced free of charge it turns out even the wholesalers were scratching there heads but got on to the makers and it turned out you need a triac dimmer (special type of dimmer) to dimm these lamps and a normal electromic dimmer would not work with these lamps so problem now solved
