Dan.Sydes

Hi all,

I am new to the site, so apologies if I am posting in the wrong area. I desperately need some help / advice regarding electrical qualifications or proving my experience as an electrician.

I have work employed and self employed as an electrician now for over 12 years. I was never given the opportunity to complete a NVQ or registered qualification over the years and now times are hard and it is an employer market I am finding it very difficult to find employment as everyone asks for full NVQ or apprenticeship. I do have 17th wiring regulation ceritifcate.

Being over 30 and I am finding it very difficult to find any helpful information regarding what I could do to help with regard to getting the right qualifications or proof of my experience / knowledge as an Electrician.

I think because of my age the NVQ route is out, however I would be most grateful for any advice regarding what I could do to get some sort of official quali or card or anything that proves the knowledge and experience I have as an electrician. I am finding it so hard that not having these numbers on my CV negates the over whelming experience I have as an electrician.

Or just go for the 5 week wonder course !

Sorry, but to me you are not a sparkie until you have basic qualifications, starting from the C&G 2330, start at college doing this, then i and alot of other sparkies will be more helpful. To me, it sounds like you were taken on as a mate, then you've been bluffing it ever since.

And they wonder why our trade has had it !

Hi mate

If you can design , install, inspect and test and fill in required certiificate or report to BS7671 2008 amendment no 1 2011 with the 17th edition Elecsa would probably accept you but you will then get a assessment date were you will have to show them all your paperwork and your 17th qualification I believe at present this is the only one they ask for
you have to pay them £444 have PLI about £80 for £2million liability and test equipment which is fully calibrated and also have to have some major work on a domestic premises to show them eg CCU change or rewire and this work has to be in accordance with the regulations and building regulations

You dont have to have 2391-10 inspection and testing or the replacement quals 2394 and 2395 but it helps to prove your competence
But ideally you would be better doing a evening course
All courses are expensive as since the torys got in any funding you may have been eligible for when on certain benefits was cut last year the 2330 has also ended for registration but i believe there is a new course and qualification 2365 for adults which is basically not the apprentice route so at some point to be fully qualified you would need a NVQ

you could try and jsut do the NVQ 2356 lv3 last registration date is 31st december there are private providers such as Xs training and Delta training but you basocally have to prove yoour competence and complete work to meet set requirments
such as working confined space , commercial, industrial, agricultural etc 2 of these areas of work 3 containment systems
but as you have limited quals you would probably have to do a full knowledge assessment as well as completing a portfolio of your work covering 8 required units 3 times so you would need work for evidence Ie photos of you doing the job and someone who is acting as a supervisor would need to sign your witness statements

I feel for you mate as i was in a similar position but also a carer for my mrs who was left disabled I worked for years without qualifications as I didnt complete my apprenticeship at 16
I paid £4k for a private course to get basic quals including 17th
and some theory and practical training basic tools regs and a Amegger MFT 1552 at the time I had tried all options before handing over this money reluctantly

then after completing soon found out a lot of employers and sparks on here dont like quick courses as they feel its drumming down the industry and also doesnt provide enough time to complete all whats needed
basically if you do one of these courses people will still not class ytou as a electrician but you would get enough knowledge and learn everything you need to know to carry out work in a domestic environment
But they sell you these courses like you will be a electrician in 6 weeks which is a total crock of ????

but you would be able to register with elecsa or NIC as a domestic instaleller

after i had done this course i then realised to even have a chance of work would need more qualifications and most ask for 2391-10
so i studied every day for aboutt 4 or 5 months and did a 8 week evening course 3 hrs a week and then its a written exam and practical assigments its a hard exam as you have to know correct terminology for everyhting

I then was told to get JIB status as electricain I would need 2330 and NVQ 2356 lv3 so after much searching over 2 years managed to get a place at college for 2330 lv3
I passed all with distinctions
Even though a lot on here will say go this route, this route isnt perfect as I had 8 tutors over the year
the only practical involved was basicaly me and another mate helping the others on the course who had been there 3 yrs how to carry out Inspection and testing
I only got distinctions and found it easier due to earlier courses such as the 2391 and studying every day for the year
But due to this the exams were a breeze compared to 2391-10

I have also jsut completedmy NVQ this cost £780 as i had to do a Half Knowledge assesssment due to not having 2330 completed at the time
you may need to do the full knowledge and portfolio at a cost of £900 without a electrotechnical cert like 2330
at college a NVQ costs about £600 when you have completed a technical cert or is completed at same time

Apprentice route is via a employer and doing the C&G 2357 which is a electotechnical cert and nvq in one this i believe isnt open to adults

But I do wish I had done this route from the begining as when i enrolled found out that instead of having to pay £800 for the year as i was on certain benefits I would only have to pay the £140 exam fees
so this was a result and if only someone would have told me it was possible as a adult to get back on at college i would have done that and saved myself a large amount of cash and stress
I had tried for years and years to get back on a course similar to my apprenticeship but was always told there wasnt any or any help with training funding or basically anything this was mis information from the likes of the jobcentre

Wish I had found this site before enrolling on private course as i would still have a lot of our savings left from when My partner and I was employed

Mate there is no easy road and no one in authority will help or advise
If your committed contact every college you can as i did and try to get on a course for the NEW 2365 electrotechnical
or ring XS training aand ask them could you doa NVQ but for this you need work as evidence

I wish you all the best mate altogether i have probably spent £7k+ and not had much in return
But what can you do but try
good luck

quick courses are provided all over country but expensive
such as RF training, trade for skills there are loads think NIC provide some also able skills in dartford lent provide all courses but i works out expensive and if you ahve to travle like i would have had to living up north would have had to pay for digs there courses can be done over a number of weeks like 2 weeks on 2 off or weekends depending on the course
so i chose the nearest after researching but for £4k it was very expensive should have been £5k but there was a special discount and since i did it with them they have changed what quals you get as i believe they removed the building regulations C&G 2393 and included theC&G 2392 Inspection and testing Lv2 which basically used to lead onto 2391-10 LV3 it was for the 6 weeks plus its full on non stop as tme is limiting factor so they have loads to cram in your head and its a bit to rushed to be honest, as well as studying at home the whole time the 17th will help you with terminology for all courses

As above, it's not impossible Dan just stay focused and go for it. if your not employed then its possible these courses might be subsidised,( although that would need checking).
Dont listen to the negative responses, with 12 years in the industry you probably have as much experience as many electricians with all the paperwork.
Good luck mate and go for it

brucelee thank you so much for taking your time to write such a detailed and helpful reply. This is extremely helpful to me and I will certainly look into some of your suggestions here. Again thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Thanks dagrat, trust me I ignored the negative posts on here. I most certainly have more experiance than alot of 'fully qualified' electricians I have worked with over the years, so I am keen to get this nailed to help me with work going forward. Like I say experience is not an issue, just need the paperwork to prove it. But lots to go on from this post, so thanks for the help

Thanks ever so much for that Brucelee, can relate to a fair bit of it too. Am now at the point of having to throw a lot of money after qualifications - and I have very little experience OR qualifications so my life's gonna be hard, but I DO have my cut finger wrapped in electrical tape and my ankle and heel that were bleeding into new boots wrapped in gaffer tape, so that's gotta count for something *takes photos of injuries for future NVQ*

No probs hope its some help to whoever

Speak to Xs regarding your experience etc if you have the work and can prove your carrying it out to the regs and building regs etc etc
maintain safe site working
fault finding
preparing to install
installing
connecting and Inspecting and testing electrical installations then your almost there for a NVQ
and if you can do that you can join a scheme it isnt easy dont think it is as i am still trying and have been for last 20+ yrs since giving up my apprenticeship
WHAT A FOOLISH YOUNGSTER I WAS If Only I could have a word with myself knowing what i knwo now then

good luck to all it isnt easy but anyhting is possible they say

if you can manage the 2391 (not sure what theyve called it now) tough exam (or used to be) which is relatively short and reasonably priced through colleges, then that would add a lot of clout to your cv and open up some doors.

think the only time ive ever needed my jib card was to scrape ice of the windscreen
