many thanks gawain.

You need a UTR (unique tax reference) to be paid through the construction insustry scheme (CIS).
You can earn up to ÂŁ6475 every year before you start paying tax, but everything still needs to go through the inland revenue (tax man).

Without an active UTR you may have to pay 'emergency' tax at 30% as opposed to the standard 20%, which you should be able to claim back through your tax return at the end of the year.

Try 0845 366 7899, or their geographic number, 0161 930 8706 which will come out of your allocated minutes if you're on a contract phone. As brucelee said they'll probably just tell you to call someone else so it's a good idea to use the phone in the tax office if you can, otherwise try SAYNOTO0870.COM - Non-Geographical Alternative Telephone Numbers which gives you geographic alternatives to non-geographic numbers which will work out cheaper if you're calling from a mobile.

Another thing is keep a folder with all your tax stuff in it, eg invoices, letters from the inland revenue, expenses (tools, courses, PPE, travel expenses etc) which will make your tax return easier.
