guys i need some help quickly...

i agreed to a rewire of a friend of a friend..(yes we know the type.)

any way i had 4-5 quotes from local sparks at around 5-6k each

my property is a 5 bed town house and it has a small annex at the back..

i thought the prices we too high so i allowed this "handyman" to quote and he said he could do it for ÂŁ1.5k

i thought brilliant, some body who does not want to rip me off.. (i know the price of equiptment as i do have access to web sites with prices and also look in screwfix cataloge..!)

any way 2 months down teh line i have had to fork out nearly 9k on this rerwire as he said the cable i got him was not suitable after been fitted and the voltage was been lost, also the socket outlets are all over the place and of different design, walls were to hard and needed to buy biogger drills.. etc every excuse has been used...

my fuse box is a disgrace and looks like its been fitted by an child...!

im a doctor by profession and if i was to do work like this on a patient i would be struck off...! who can i complain to as he told me his mate would sign the job off for BC...! im now dubuious

but to top it off my wife went for a shower and got a small but nasty shock from the pipes which were showing 120volts after i had them checked by a "proper" electrician

i have been requoted 6k to start again and i cant afford it...!!! not after paying so much money out to this chap...! do you think 6k is a lot of money as i dont like to be ripped off..!

is any one local that could have a look please and provide me with a second opinion!

I don't know where to begin!

You knowingly went in to an agreement to have your house re wired by a "handyman" not a qualified spark.

You've had 5 quotes with all 5 giving you a similar price so it would be fair to say that 5-6k wasn't an unreasonable price.

You're up the creek I'm afraid Dr.

what did you expect really?

electrical is a profession like yours and if you get a handyman at that price what do you think would of happened

im actually really annoyed with this
5-6k is because of a skill thats taken many years to aquire
but i hope your wife is ok tho!

your only recourse is legal actiopn, but i wouldn't hold out much hope. the guy will plead poverty and get away with a fiver a month, and you would of course have to pay all the legal fees without much hope of recovering them. as monkey said, up the creek.

there are one or two good guys, forum members, in your area, who i'm sure will be willing to have a look at it for you.

I don't think you need someone to pop round for a 'second' opinion, you've had 5 or 6 opinions so far, all pointing to about the same money.

The clues are in the question above.

Buy cheap, buy twice!

sorry mate, there's only one person to blame, (your self) your a doctor so not wet behind the ears, yet you let a HANDYMAN rewire your house, for 1.5k, when five electrician quote between 5 to 6k THAT'S WHAT'S IT IS, for 1.5k you couldn't get materials for that, that's the reason IS A HANDY MAN NOT A ELECTRICIAN, its like saying i wont go to hospital to get my arm taking off by a doctor il go the a butcher because he only wants a drink for it, if i was you il post my location on here and let a guy who knows what he doing before your house burns down, sorry to be blunt but your one of the reason people get killed and HANDYMEN get away with it,

And we all know where this thread will end up.

Dr G, you have had a few replies, all with roughly the same opinion.

Hopefully one of the forum lads near to you can contact you via PM and offer some assistance.

The reason why i am closing this, is to save on moderation time.

Let us know how you get on.

Good luck!

Half a dozen qualified electricians quoted the around the same price.....a 'handyman' quotes ÂŁ4K less.....alarm bells should have rung straight away!!!!!

As for the price to put right, seeing as it's the same as the original quotes, I reccomend you accept the quote and get all the existing work taken out and put back in correctly by a qualified spark who can issue the certificates himself without having to rely on a 'mate' which is not permitted by building regs anyway.
