Discuss hey people wondering if some 1 could shed some light on rccb keeps tripping in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net
rccb only trips when any heavy duty appliance is plunged in microwave boiler. tv seams fine
this is what i have done so far tested the mcb's also the rccb and all is fine so placed it back in (friend done a ramp test for me)
next i disconnected all appliances and light bulbs and checked for voltage leaks and to my surprise i find on the split board n1 bank neutral has 108V coming threw it in relation to n2 bank, and eirth so eventually isolated the single neutral wire and have left it disconnected but even disconnected the rccb is tripping
im actually a bit confused
i had a similar problem on friends house last year and found that it was water filled up in a flood light outside but it was giving similar values
You need an IR test carried out.....90% of RCD tripping issues are caused by a low insulation resistance somewhere. An IR test should ALWAYS be the first course of action.
I'm assuming that you don't have much test gear as you say that a friend did a ramp test for you?
You also say that you have left a single neutral wire disconnected? If so, that is dangerous.
I would strongly recommend you get a qualified electrician to help you with this.

Don't forget to do r1 r2 test before IR test then at least you no your meggering the whole circuit but yes the lads are right IR test will so you which circuit it is that's tripping
just a thought. if it's not a faulty appliance and IR tests come out good, could be a poor connection. the voltage on that neutral needs investigating though.
Don't forget you only need to IR test L+N to E, as you are only looking for an earth fault here, as an RCD won't trip on a L to N leak, so this should speed your testing up a bit.
wow thanks for the positive reply's people, for now i have left the main board isolated from power and using a temp rcd board with wiring for lighting and main appliances just until the problem is solved so much easier to start from scratch
but i no what i need to do now im going to follow that neutral wire back also floor boards are easily accessible
my friend is away for a week so this is my time frame to try to find problem if i cant no big deal
once again thanks again for each reply
if there's no load across L and N, then you won't read continuity. if you have the CU end of a neutral dissed. from the N bar, as soon as any load is on the circuit, you wiill get a voltage backon the neutral. no complete circuit = no current flow = no volt drop.
sorry for delay forgot
but have solved the problem with help what had happened was my brother drilled threw floor boards straight into wire but the rccb never tripped that day it tripped about a week after
this wire was an old cooker wire that has not been used for several years(kitchen had been moved to different location) so ripped out the old cooker wire and everything working fine no rewiring necessary
if only i switched that cooker switch on i would have found the problem straight away (the only 1 i never switched lol)
nice to see a result posted. but why was that redundant circuit still connected?
