Hi i just started working for a heating company after being out of the game for a while. Can anyone shed any light on why the f i have to relocate the main switched fused spur from the airing cupboard/cylinder down to whereever the boiler is?

I've been told it's something to do with gas safe or something but i can't for the life of me figure out what problems it resolves.

head sparks and supervisor. They say it's a specification brought out by gas safe so we just have to do it.
Problem is it means i have to lift peoples flooring and move all their stuff and then how does local isolation work within the airing cupboard considering 'we don't need a switch in there'.
Job takes twice as long and is in my opinion worse.

Sounds like an opportunity to pxss customers off with unnecessary work.

Have you tried the "plumbers" forum for their opinions?

thought he needed a sensible answer

There is supposed to be local isolation at the boiler within 1.2 meters I think, but this might only be company policy for a firm I worked for. We used to leave the switched fused spur at the wiring centre in the airing cupboard if it was there and put an isolator next to the boiler, a double pole switch if the boiler only required switched live and neutral or a triple pole isolator if the boiler required pump over run then you would block the pump live in the back box and take the live/switched live and neutral through the triple pole isolator.

Not BG is it?

close to BG.
Yeah thats standard practice as far as i know Lee but they won't supply me with triple pole switches as van stock

Local means of isolation at the boiler has been about for years. Most electricians would use simply use a 1g light switch by the boiler for basic systems. If L+N+SL, then use a local 3 pole isolation switch to boiler, especially if system already wired. I have read MI though on modern boilers that the heating system electrics start at the boiler ie spur point fitted by the boiler. Don"t know about local isolation in the airing cupboard then for elec bits in there

Yep and seeing as this is how simple it is, Why can't this be sorted out via a few phone calls.
ie: Hi i'm head sparks for 'a company thats close to being BG xDD', this spec makes no sense can we do it the normal way please'
gas safe: oh go on then.

I will be moaning at work

It's normally down to the MI's, means of isolation should be near to the boiler. We leave spurs in place and just fit a triple pole next to boiler.
