Mr. Anderson

Hi everyone.

My names Chris, I'm 31 and in my spare time I've been training to become an electrician (with the aim to set up my own company as soon as I'm quilifed). I've nearlly complited 3 years of evening course doing the 2330 lvl2 & lvl3 and I'm trying to find out what I need to do next, however I'm stuggeling to get any defenitive answers. From asking around (tutors, people in the game, the forum, and college sites) it seems I need the following. (next to each quilifaction I've added why I'm doubting I should get them)

2391 I&T (looking on some web sites I've seen a course called 2395 which claim to replace the 2391)
17th Edition (my understanding of the above course seemed to sugest that this included the 17th Edt)
Part P (I've been told this is up in the air and some people are offering the old course which isn't worth the paper it's written on)

Many thanks for your help,
Chris.

Welcome.

1st. No such thing as part p qualification, don't waste your money. Just buy the part p regs book and comply with them.

2nd. Get your 17th ed, defiantly need it.

3rd.2391 study for it whilst your doing the level 3, it will make it easier to understand.

Good luck.

Yep, agree with Paul.
To do Part P work you will need to be a self assessment scheme member (or pay exorbitant LABC charges). But if you know about the building regs as applicable to electrical work then you do not need a course. "Electricians guide to the building regulations" covers most of what you need to know.

2391 is the course that will be replaced by the 2395 but because of "variations" by the C&G the change over has been delayed, it was meant to come in from 1st Jan but will now come in later (possibly July?)
Either course will cover similar material, you will just need to know in 10 years time that the 2391 is equivalent to 2395 (or whatever they have then changed it to!)

hi and welcome,

17th is a must really, not that hard if you learn how to use the book.
2391, i just passed mine and i agree with above you'll find it easier if done at the same time as you 2330. it does take hard work on your part and i would def say do it over a few days not a few weeks of eve.

part p- bit of a joke, but from what i hear theres going to be a big change with it this year.

maybe think about adding the nvq units to your 2330

If you do the 17th edition, and then work to it, you will comply with Part P. Part P says that to comply you must work to the current version of the wiring regs. 2 birds with one stone as they say. And you can get a round in with the money i have just saved you wasting on a "Part P" course.

Cheers........Howard

Well thanks for all the good advise, warm welcomes and helpful tips.

So it looks like I'll be signing up for the 2391 and 17th edt that will start in the middel of April. Here's hoping I'm "fully quilifed" by the summer.

Thanks again,
Chris.

I think the 2395 is going ahead now but it depends on whether the college has the new material together yet. I am signed up for a 2395 starting next week and last I heard it would be the new course.
