Hi all,

I started my electrical apprenticeship nearly 10 years ago went to college for 3 and half years on the C&G 2330 I passed every test except the last one on level 3. I worked as an apprentice electrician for 2 and a half years before Jacking it in. The company I worked for weren't very good and wasn't being shown much apart from gunning walls out and throwing 1.5mm t&e around the loft space (that I mastered!) Not entirely true I did pick a few things up but I was mainly a cheap labourer. I started a different career in welding and fabrication and have been for the last 7/8 years. I don't wanna be doing this for the rest of my working life.

Im wanting to finish of my qualifications but I see the 2330 has been superceded by 2365? My goal is to work mainly in domestic and going self employed route at some point over the next few years. I realise that I will have to try and find a sparks that would employ me as a improver? To pick up were I left.

Anyone been in a similar situation?

Cheers

Dave

I have to say that's two careers you have become disenchanted with in a row. So you didn't like electrics (because you were cheap labour?) You don't like welding (another skill) and you want to go back to electrics. Whats to say you will like electrics anymore than shelf filling.

You would be right in saying I became disenchanted with electrical installations but that is due to the firm I worked for at the time.

There seems to be this notion that apprentices are there to do the jobs the sparky dont wanna do (chassing walls ect). Some people dont seem to register the fact if they are not learning their choosen craft then their simply not gonna get anywhere as what happened to me.

As with my current situation I do enjoy my job but its not something I wanna be doing when im 50 (20 years time) ive seen what the job has done to the old timers and I dont want the same demise.

Roll your sleeves up, and trying getting on with agency work, to gain some more experience where you left off, on the other hand maybe try some big firms, you might get lucky.
