Hi everyone this looks like a great forum.

I need abit of advice.

I've been doing my electrical course since sept2005 and am now coming to the end of the 4th year but it seems to have gone off the rails abit.

In the first 3 years it was great, I went to college 1 day per week and had a load of exams etc, most of which I got distinctions in and did all my key skills and now have about 20odd certificates.

This last year though (since sept08), all i got was a portfolio with loads of knowledge questions and space for me to write reports on 3 jobs that cover the required criteria, where my assessor comes on site and watches me do some work etc.

I've started working though the knowledge questions although struggling abit and don't get any feedback or help from college.

only problem is, i work for a small firm that pretty much does domestic work only like rewires, disabled bathrooms and alterations around 'mr & mrs smiths' house etc

so it isn't easy to fill all these criteira and now my assessor is starting loose interest in me just because I can't invite him to all these comercial/industrial jobs he wants to see.

I'm starting to feel like the last 4 years have been a waste of time as I'm never going to get my nvq3 at this rate.

anyone know what I should do.

Thanks
Rob

Be a little economical with the truth. But SSHHH you didn't hear it form me.;)

Seriously though I know you have to cover various types of access equipment, wiring systems cable types and so on.

If you dont cover the scope of electrical work it is difficult so you may need to think outside the box a bit, i.e you could say you used galv conduit in Mrs Jones house to protect a cable drop in the wall which was buried less than 50mm.

Also you could say you used a small scaffoldong tower to replace a high level floodlight or something.

Believe me the assessor isn't that keen anyway as long as you can get the relevant literature and a few pics to back up your statements it'll be fine.:)

hi i guess maybe for example say if a "friend" had done a job using swa for a shed supply and that "friend" had some pics he could give you you could say it was yours;)

also i wonder if you could create a mock up at home using the methods you need to cover ie test you own house , do a bit of galv pipe in the garage etc
dont worry there must have been loads of guys in your possition youll be ok

we are all ways here
ps what are the items you need to cover

Just thought I would update this that not long after I made this thread I pulled my finger out and get it sorted and was awarded my NVQ3 in December.

Thanks for the advice/encouragement.

Well done m8, is that you sorted now JIB etc?

I'm not entirely sure tbh. As far as the firm I work for are concerned I've finished my apprenticeship and I've had my payrise.

I'm not JIB, I don't do any work that requires that and I wouldn't know where/how to get it anyway.

Next on the list is doing T&I and not sure after that.

Any recommendations/advice would be appreciated.
