Anyone who believes the coming campaign activity may apply to them and who wants to come forward now and voluntarily disclose can call HMRC.
This builds on HMRC's plumbers' campaign and gives an opportunity to another group of trades people to come forward and declare unpaid tax.

Trades 2nd campaign - – electricians/electrical fitters –Electrician’s Tax Safe Plan (ETSP) -starting February 2012.

HM Revenue & Customs: HMRC Campaigns

Make sure you do all your notifications, but I thought that Part P was introduced for Safety reasons. :D

While I agree that everyone has a moral duty (as well as a legal obligation) to pay the right amount in tax and NI I think it's disgusting that HMRC are pursuing what will be relatively minor amounts while millionaires like Vince Cable get away with a smack on the legs and a seat on the naughty step for "forgetting" that he earnt a couple of hundred thousand pounds

I understand what they are trying to do but as I have highlighted on another forum why dont they go after the employment agencies who hire someone via the Ltd company dodge and the companies who participate in this when the rules say if you do not have more than 3 sources of income then then for tax records you are deemed employed not self employed.

As I have said before I keep my records up to date every day yes every day no running about with a fistfull of receipts at the end of the year plus they are all on a spread sheet and backed up every 2 weeks to a memory stick because I just dont trust PCs unlike the writers who come on TV to say that they have lost 2 years work because they left their laptop on the train

A quote I heard fairly recently somewhere (may even have been here): You can tell the revenue as many lies as you like, just so long as you keep records good enough to prove the truth.

I have been trading for less than a year, however, in that time i have already carried out at least 5 jobs that i have notified but have recieved no money for, for instance, for my assessment i changed a CU for a friends mum, I have a friend of over 20 years with a muscle wasting disease who moved into disabled accomodation, i did his kitchen electrics for him for no charge, my partners mums kitchen, and a few other small jobs for friends and family that have needed notifying.

If you multiply this by the number of sparks in the country, and investigate each notified job to see if any payment was given, i suspect that HMRC would have to spend far more than they would ever get back to identify and prove that any wrong doing was done!!! I also suspect that the person doing the investigating will be charging far more than i do per hour.

And then you have to pay someone to make sure that the investigators are paying their taxes too.....

I think that was one of my quotes.

It was advice that was given to me by an accountant I used to have. He was an ex-Inland Revenue bloke ......... ;)

I first met him in the 1970s when I was playing in a pub band & one day received an assessment notice from the Tax Man stating that I hadn't declared my income from my "employment" as a musician, and they were demanding I paid them some £400.

After this bloke had finished with them they paid me about £1,200 !!!!! :)

I have a slightly different point of view.
We are in difficult economic times. Nobody is spending and things are grinding to a halt. I fully understand that the exchequer needs taxes and we all must pay BUT I think that the targetting of minor infringements is counter productive.
If I were to do a (labour only) job for £10, I would lose 20% in tax, 11% in NI and 20% in VAT. My £10 would end up less than a fiver. I get a plumber in for a £5 job, he ends up with £2.50. That £2.50 is spent with the next person and ends up as £1.25.
However, if I were to get an unsdeclared £10, I could get the plumber to do two £5 jobs, he then can pay for 4 £2.50 jobs which leads to 8 £1.25 jobs. This leads to a feelgood factor, more work for more people etc etc.
Obviously I am not condoning such actions and would never do this myself, but why target small scale misdemeanours that actually benefit the economy than go after the real villains?

The tax system is to complex, there are FAR too many people doing cash only work.

The killer is the threshold for 20% tax and 8% NI - so 28% of every pound earny going into the Government coffers.

Our illustrious Government have set a goal to increase the tax threshold to £10K, which is a start, then they need to reintroduce the 10% band for the next £10K, which could be offset against removing the NI maximum payment.

Agree completely.
I was talking more about people getting a few quid for very small jobs not larger scale persistent defrauding of the revenue which should always be a target and should not need a revenue campaign to be investigated.
I fear that some relatively small misdemeanors will be picked on which can actually have a positive effect on the economy.

Murdoch I here what you say but remember before you pay 20% + 8% you need to earn aroundabout £7600 but if I get a tap on the door with we want to see your books well of course they have a legal right but with me it could be I have put something in the wrong section an honest mistake where I think they are going all wrong is the should go to Senate Screwfix CEF and ask to see who the big cash buyers are then get their details and investigate them or better still wholesalers should be obliged to give them this information I for one believe in paying my taxes because if we dont we will end up like Greece and it also sickens me that while I am playing by the book some of our east european cousins are pulling out a roll of bank notes from their pockets in full view of everybody on both sides of the counter.

One last thing to remember HMRC are good at putting the wind up people they did with Taxi drivers in Manchester when they went on local radio and said they were droughting in teams of investigators to liase with the DSS so on Monday Morning 5000 people informed DSS that they had got a job as a taxi driver and they have done the same with fast food vendors plumbers and now its our turn

HMRC seem to be going after everyone at the minute!

HMRC are just doing their job and in this current economical climate they are making sure everyone pays their share so if you look at Rangers FC years ago they would accept 30p in the pound to settle but they are sending out a message to all football clubs and that is get your house in order or we will put you out of business my view is Graig White took a gamble and his timing was lousy plus the quicker HMRC get on to the people living in a £1,000,000 house and paying he same tax as a shelf stacker in Tesco can no longer be accepted and remember when the banks were paying huge tax bills it was ok to leave sleeping dogs but now income is what it is all about and they are not stupid if you a living the life of someone on £60k but are declaring £35k watch out
