Hey guys just looking for some advice on where next to take my learning. Im currently working as an improver (but doing sparks work) as im sure most people do! got my 2330 and 16th (upgrading)and just finishing off my nvq.
Im not sure what direction i want to go after this, but was looking into maybe design or something more involved. would the electrical hnc/hnd help me with this, does any1 no what the course covers, I would have to do nights ! if any 1 has any advice it would be much appreciated!
cheers daz!

My advice is.....

1. C&G 2391-10, insp & test

2. C&G 2391-20, design erection & verification

3. HNC, now it depends in which direction you wish to travel as to which HNC you do.

The HNC then leads on to the HND which in turn can lead on to a degree depending on how far you want to take it.

I agree with Lenny, Do the inspection & testing and the design courses, they will be useful for the rest of your life. With HNC, well, again I have to agree with Lenny, it depends what you want to do. HNC and further
would only make sense if you aim for a engineering manager's job or similar, however if you want a hands on job then it wouldn't benefit you a lot. In this case focus on the C&G courses.

And doing a HNC part time is hard, so I heard.

would you say the 2391 is essential as i no it will give me the 'approved' status but is this needed if i was wishing to do the 2391-2 . the testing doesnt particularly intrest me but i understand it would probably give me a good base for going into the 2391-2.. is this correct? cheers

Well, again IMO the 2391-10 insp & test will go a long way to helping you with 2391-20 as you are only having to learn 1 new thing - designing, as opposed to 2 - designing and verifying.

Also if the 10 is done first, you are then exempt from the practical assessment of the 20, again making the course easier IMO.

Your decision, but do you plan to carry on with installation works or go into an office role???

yes i do plan to go into the office, im currently 24 and dont want to be on the tools forthe rest of my life but understand that experience pays so i would stay on the tools whilst going back to college and learning. i havent real considered the 2391-10 or -20 i was just thinking of going straight into the hnc. would you not recommend this then?

Well if I didn't have a middle name and was the father of modern physics then maybe.

You'll prorbably find most places wont allow you to go straight onto the HNC from 2330 anyway as they feel you wont pass and to be fair you probably wont. You'll have at least maths bridging courses to do and then without the ONC they still may refuse you entry.

At least with a better track record of courses under your belt they may look more favourably on you, particularly as hands on experience is also at a minimum with you.

Going from 2330 to HNC is like going from a morris marina to a challenger 2 with no training, IMO not do-able.

Here is a link to the Electrical and Electronic Engineering HNC content that I'm starting in September.

hope this isnt called hijacking a post but im sure its within the topic....
Im about to start my level 3 at college part-time in sept and wanted to know if i had to do the NVQ??

so my plan is:

Level 2~completed
Level 3~starting
17th ~to do
AM2 ~to do
2391-10 ~to do

Is it ok to do these courses in this order without having to do the NVQ??
Or is an NVQ a must before going on to the other courses??

Im not sure if im smart enough to take on the designing side of things, although it would be great to work towards a ~HNC/HND award

Thanks for any help... GL to you daz in the future

Personally I would do my NVQ 3 NOW...as after November you will not be able to do it as a stand alone qual as it wont exist.

This will mean you are unable to obtain "approved electrician" grading from the JIB.

Thanks for that link lenny gonna have a read through it now! when u say ur starting this in september do you mean that your a tutor? also with the step from 2330 to hnc/d, it would be from the nvq which is level three so i just thought the next step would be level 4 being hnc leading to hnd?

Do u have any quick links for viewing... i think ive heard you can do the NVQ3 online unless im mistaken???

Also im only working for a firm that have a contract for council upgrades/rewires... im worried i wont be able to get any jobs needed within the NVQ3 portfolio.

Level 3 to Level 4 YES CORRECT

HOWEVER

Level 3 NVQ and the Level 3 2330 is a different kettle of fish to Level 4/5 HNC

A levels and ONC are the forerunner of a HNC/HND
