Hi all

Looking for some information on the above courses please. I have read all the spiel on the various college websites but I'm looking for a students view/opinion on them?

I did mine in 2006. If your an academic qualification it's a good course to do. But from a work perspective I found 2391, 2372 more useful.

Hello, the course you are looking for will be 3 days a week, most likely monday to wednesday, and this will be 9AM to 4PM, you will get a student ID card that will get you discounts in various places.

You will be looking at either 3 days a week or 2 evenings a week for 18 months to do the HNC, you can do the second year of the HND after this, there is no time limit/minimum for the second year so if you can do all the practical work and written papers/projects in 3 months then that's what it will take, the College will give you a print off saying you have the HND, after that you will have to wait until the end of the college year to get your certificate along with all the other students (the one with the logo on fancy paper)

I did this myself back in 2000/2001

the subjects (units) you will get in the HNC are:

(1)Introductory Maths for Engineers.
(2)Maths for Engineers.
(3)Combinational Logic.
(4)Sequential Logic.
(5)Programming for Engineers(plus the project for that)
(6)PLC's (Programmable Logic controllers)
(7) Engineering Project.
(8) Introduction to ISO 9001-2000 and amendment 2007.
(9)Engineering Business Studies
(10) Computing for Engineers (otherwise known as "IT 101")
(11) Engineering Test instruments.
(12)MicroElectronic circuits.
(13) Engineering CAD (Autocad, Pro Engineer and PCB works)
(14) Electronic Circuit construction skills
( design Electronic circuits on paper and using cad, use PCB cad to design circuit board mask, expose, etch, drill, populate/build and test+ written report)

(15)Mechanics for Engineers (this will involve written reports, destructive testing such as Brinnel, Vickers, Tensile testing....as well as non-destructive testing such as paint testing and may involve extra work on pro-Engineer (ProE) cad software which has material simulation, this is where you put in the info for the material and it gives you a colour print out of stress, elongation etc)

(16) Either a business and advertising Unit, or a European Language unit, these are electives...

for Merit/Distinction awards, the College will offer the following, which you would need to do at least 2 of:

(A) Calculus 1 for Engineers (extra maths)
(B) a second European Language.
(C)Mechatronics HN unit.
(D)an additional Project
(E)Analogue Electronics HN Unit.

I did this when I was 17/18 and there was an age range from 17 to 84 years old on the course, there are normally 30 people to each course, sometimes the college will have discretion (and funding) to add up to 6 people to this, these places are especially geared towards mature students (students over 21)

hope this helps :)

I just had to re-do this message as my wifi booted me out and firefox scrubbed it

Sure. Both fantastic learning. But if you're looking for it to help you in domestic a lot, probably not so much. In a maintenance/industrial/design scene, a must I'd say

Hi kevyn you have not got time for HNC mate.. you should be out polishing the RS....

Each college has their own syllabus, so there's no guarantee that the units will be the same at each college - you just need to get the correct number of units. Ours was 9am - 7pm, it was a day release for 2 years, but apparently that's now been reduced to 18 months. Some of it was relatively easy, some (maths) I found very hard. Expect to put the hours in as it's all assignment based. From the units Grantr37's referring to, I'm guessing he did electronic engineering, not electrical. Put the effort in Kevyn, it'll be worth it in the end!
