I've got to go and look at a sealed plate hob on Monday where 2 of the plates aren't working.
Normally I'd just replace the whole lot but this was only installed about a year ago so unlikely that it would have broken down already.
The landlord reckons it could be a thermostat, (ie one for each pair of plates?), but I would have thought there would be one thermostat for each plate.

My initial plan of action was to have a look for obvious causes from underneath without taking it out, then worst comes to the worst rip it out and take it to an appliance repair shop for an estimate, although that would leave the tenant temporarily without a hob.

Does anyone have any experiences with this kind of thing, or any other suggestions?

The retailer will argue that 1 year it is, but thats rubbish

Got a kettle replaced when it failed after nearly 2 years. The shop didn't want to know, so go in touch with manufacturer and stirred it up a bit and in the end the shop had to replace it HAHA

Is it not generally a 1 year warranty? This has been in between 1 and 2 years and I very much doubt the receipt can be found.

Sale of Goods Act - goods should be of reasonable quality and fit for purpose etc. You dont expect a hob to fail after 1 or 2 years. BTW you dont need a receipt just proof of purchase, so a card bill or bank statement would be sufficient

This may sound like I'm telling you to suck eggs Adam (which I'm not) but please check the crimps on both L+N after the incoming supply terminations. My washing machine had the same fault earlier this year and it was just a crimp that came off, just a thought. Also my wife deals in grantee issues, I'll show her this thread tonight and let her give you your legal rights but I think they are the same as above but I'll check for you.

That was going to be my first port of call; as I remember there's a link which should be present for single phase operation so it may be that that's fallen out or worked loose hence some of the plates not working. I've got my fingers crossed that that's what it is (or something similar) because I don't fancy having to pick all the sealant out and resealing it again.

The plates had gone at different times over a space of months. One was actually working, just not getting as hot as it should have been, the other wasn't working at all. No signs of damaged cables or loose connections so took it out and took it to a repair shop who reckoned it would have been about £50 for a couple of new plates, then I'd have had to fit them myself. Got a reconditioned ceramic hob for £69 from the appliance shop down the road plus £3.47 for a tube of silicone from Wilkinsons.
Happy tenant,
happy customer,
happy days.
:pimp2:

Thanks for all the advice, even though I appear to have completely ignored all of it. :rolleyes2:
