To cut a long story short I was working with 16th edition and 2391 inspection and testing before being asked to go self employed. Now that I have the firm have asked I be qualified through the JIB. Now at thirty that isn’t going to be easy. I have explored two routes and that is college and training provider. I am wondering what the pros and con's are apart from the money obviously. Also as I am out of work my priority is to achieve these in the shortest amount of time. I have been working in a maintenance electrician/operator capacity for the last 10 years roughly of which I got into by chance and now need the bits of paper by the looks of it. Anyway this is what I have come up with so far.

College: - 2330 Level 3, 2356 with VQ training and 17th update 2382-20 ÂŁ1700
Olci:-Fully qualified electrician course (Alarm bells ringing after reading on here) ÂŁ5858.85

Revised today OLCI: - 2330, 2356 NVQ, 17th Update and Photovoltaic ÂŁ3106 roughly getting back with a price tomorrow.

all opinion taken onboard but my main concern is that the stigma of the training provider is going to go against me in the future for jobs but would that not also be the case going the college route as it is not a timed served apprenticeship.

Kind regards

What does qualified through JIB mean?
You say you had the 16th, does this mean just the old 16th regulation course or the old part 1 & part 2. What qually did you have for you to enrol on the 2391?

What they are looking for is to be a JIB electrician grade why I dont know as the job does not involve installation as such. It was the old 16th Regs course C&G 2381 and C&G 2391. I also got unit 1 domestic installers a few years back before realising about the Part P side and never bothered to pursue it and stuck to what I knew. All i am looking for is to become qualified on paper for what I currently do and this to be recognised for future employment.

I'll be honest. If I were you I would get the 17th course (approx ÂŁ250 I believe) and then look around. Having the experience you have, along with the 2391 & 2382 will tick a lot of boxes in the job ads.

Asking you to go self employed, then be 'JIB' is too many kicks in the ball-locks IMO.

Hi widdler, You are right mate massive kick in the Balls and In someway feel set up, or should I say a bit of a coincidense. I agree with you yet with all the CV's sent off nothing back after chasing them up. My next step is an ECS card since my curent one runs out next month and try some of the sites for any work. Cheers Widdler.

Isn't your ECS card through the JIB?

No it is only the health and safety card which is valid for 2 years. I am looking at getting a grading from them with regard to the 2391 but that still does not satisfy electrician status.not sure where to go with this, the more I think about it the more I begrudge doing it.
