Discuss Hot Tub in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi Folks,
have been asked to remedy problems created by an 'electrician' who left his spurs and saddlebag in the understairs cupboard...
:cowboy:

Here is what there is:
Its a TT system
At the CU end is a 40A 30mA RCD, 4mm SWA run of approx 8 meters to outbuilding.
In the outbuilding a 63A 30mA RCD 2x 20A and 1x 6A mcbs.
One of the 20A mcb's feeds a 13A fused spur which has a length of 2.5mm flex intended for the hot tub connection.
The other is for sockets and the 6A is for lights.

My plan is to replace the 40A RCD with a 63A. Replace the 4mm SWA with 6mm (as per manufacturers info)
Put a 63A 100mA RCD in the outbuilding.
Replace the 20A mcb with a 32A and ditch the fused spur for a 32A rotary isolator.

Now my question is, do I need a separate earth for the outbuilding as the house is already TT? The earth spike is in the garden about 5 meters from the outbuilding and about 2 meters from the tub.

Edit.....post removed,probably a bit harsh.

Fair enough. I think I should of thought it through a bit more before posting my question. So I will today I will decide on the discrimination aspect, which came about partly due to previous 'electrician' installing the two RCD's.

Could I therefore get back to the original question, please.
Do I need another earth spike as main house TT spike is so close to the outbuilding/hot tub?

Pick one up from wholesalers and test at sub board if you dont need it take it back

So what is the current Ra value that you are seeing with the existing earth rod?? If it's a completely Naff value and/or gained from one of those thin 3/8'' twigs, then it would be better to replace altogether. If it's a decent sized rod that still has a viable screw thread, then couple another rod on to it. Or you can drive in another 2 X 1.2M coupled rod making sure you are at least 3 metres or more distant from the existing rod. Depth is the key to a good TT system, for both lowering Ra values and just as important for ensuring the TT systems stability...

I think others have brought up the other incorrect factors of your OP and by the sound of it, you seem to be in the process addressing them...
