House entry problem

I am being a little cheeky and posting a question which is not strictly electrical (in fact not at all electrical) but which I am sure you knowledgeable people can answer. We live on a clifftop by the sea so everything comes with salt, including orange car brake disks most mornings. We are close to not being able to open our front door due to, we assume, salt getting into the lock. The keys are also starting to take on a nice shade of brown. How do we fix this please?

There are remote entry keypads and systems ( can include with burglar alarm and fire alarm. The benefit is all the system is internal to the house.

just wave the key fob and in you go.

Only other answer is to cover the lock with a cover that doesn’t allow dust in .

Thanks Ziggie, but dust is not the problem - salt it.

Is there any product I can spray into the lock - and wipe on the key - to tackle the salt?

If there is no external lock , then there is no problem with the salt.

As salt dissolves in water, you could wash it away.

you could cover the key in petroleum jelly or wd40 etc and this would form a barrier but you would need to do it fairly often
perhaps using a specialist WD product ( e.g. ptfe or silicon) would protect the metal for some time.

WD 40 as a start, then get some hypoy 90 gearbox oil on there. buy Mrs. some marigolds.

Isn't gearbox oil that smelly stuff ?

I'd go withe some white lithium grease spray in the locking mechanism... on a regular basis.

Wd has an lithium grease spay but it might be too thick

On board ship we’d use a penetrating oil to free up the locks and then use XG-286 which is a salt water resistant grease, smeared into the locks.

it’s good stuff but thicker than treacle, be careful not to get any on your clothes.
