Hi

Im new here and am not an electrician but a homeowner who needs a full rewire in a four bedroom house.

Ive got a few quotes in and there more than I thought £5500- £6500.

Id like to bring this figure down. Can you suggest ways of cost saving spec wise and labour wise. EG. one guy said the four extractor fans hes fitting in the bathroom, ensuite etc are costing around £50 each as there much better than the £15 fans. All the four rooms have windows with trickle vents so do I really need the higher cost fans.

What labouring jobs could a good DIYer do that would save the electrician time.

Any other hints and tips?

thanks
Mark

Thanks guys for the replies.

Im in Belfast. Any Belfast sparks on here?

Its a normal cavity wall white rendered house. It has a garage which needs a seperate power supply and a shed which only needs a socket and two strip lights.

4 Bedrooms need three double sockets and ceiling light. Open plan lounge and dining 6 double sockets and two ceiling lights. Kitchen 6 double sockets in metal and 6 spot lights. Also usual cooker etc. utility two sockets and supply to w/machine and tumble dryer. Lounge 4 doubles and ceiling light.

HSL 6 spot lights and two double sockets.

The usual for ensuite, bathroom, toilet. No electric shower.

House will be empty of everything as its getting renovated.

I was hoping for around £4000 but maybe Im way off.

thanks
Mark

i would think 4k is a reasonable price. there are some forum members around belfast. suggest you get another quote from wherever.

The £5500- £6500 quote at first seems quite high like the house is made of flint with flint walls flint floors and flint ceilings and everything needs a dimond tip eg dimond core drill for ceiling lights etc but as said without seeing the job we dont know what it entails eg what is the supply ? single phase ? 3 phase ? as 3 phase the cost will be quite high as a 3 ph panel is more expencive than a wylex 10w ! but having said that also as said there are a few forum members near you that im sure will be happy to quote either way make sure not only is the electrician qualified is also a member of a scheme and can sign his work off or your labc might be able to recommend a good spark that way its less chance of getting a cowboy in as to saving money its always worth asking if you can labour for them etc or what jobs you can do to make it easier for them and cheaper for you ! and welcome to the forum.

I reckon i could manage that for £2500-£3000 however your across the water which is a little too far to travel

Good luck in finding someone

As part of a rewire you'll have to have mains powered, interlinked smoke/heat alarms fitted too.

Anyone saying they can do it for £2500 - £3000 shouldn't be taken seriously.

Are you for real? Ive completed many of these for between £1600-£2500 its the going rate here and id be prepared to travel to do it elsewhere for a similar price, 3 of us will have it done in 1-2 days

Anyone wanting that sort of cash is just greedy

not mandatory on rewires. i try and get clients to have them fitted though. it's not a major extra cost .

I'm doing a rewire next week- £1950 all in - 3 bedroom house and I don't use cheap materials.
I use Hager consumer units and acessories

My mate lives in Carrick Fergus (his wife and my missus are school friends). I ended up going over for a week to rewire his house as it was cheaper for him to pay my ferry fare and materials.
As he was a mate it was done just over cost, but You could still do this type of stuff for <£3000

Although I would suggest you spend extra on the spots and go for Halers or similar LED lights. These will pay for themselves in the long run

agree £3000 for a basic no frills job, it's when stainless accessories and downlighters are spec'd that the cost escalates.
