house to shed getting 3core swa round bend of house.

So I have a job to provide power to a cabin in a back garden.. Will be 3core 6mm SWA through back garden, consumer unit is at the front of the house, there is no way to dig the cable round to the back of the house as its a terraced house with a pathway to the back garden so will need to be run round the outside on the wall. Once in the back garden will be buried 600mm deep.

There are a few options I can think of:
- Try to use SWA all the way (Or too a Wiskabox before entry to house) and use 90 degree bend down to get round the corner of the house.
- 25mm pvc conduit carrying T&E to a wiskabox where changes to SWA
-20mm pvc conduit carrying 6mm singles to a wiska box where it changes to SWA.

Ive not used 3 core SWA much, how practical is it to get it round a 90 degree bend on a wall neatly?

Interested to know how anyone else would do this.

Providing the bend you make complies to the max allowable bend radii as described in BS7671.

i have seen guys dress swa with a rubber mallet quite successfully , I reckon 6mm should be fine round the outside corners. 1 piece of cable is much better than faffing about with conduits and wiskaboxes

Make an internal Hypothetical Hypotenuse in the right angle formed by the corner of the wall. fathom that out if you can. Ergo make the angle shallower by cutting away some of the brickwork, and make the angle lower than 90 degrees.

Even though 6mm swa is not a huge cable it will still not look great trying to bend it around 90degrees as it will bulge out at the sides. I expect you could force it into position but that would not be good for the cable over time. I would take a small notch out of the side of the wall so that it fits around smoothly.
Start with a very small notch, pop the cable in to see if it looks ok and gradually make the notch larger as required.

Have you ever actually done that Tel? I've thought about it but it just seems a bit too extreme to get a cable around a corner! Guess it could look pretty neat though.

done it a couple of times.with carefull fettling (if that's thr right word) of the entry and exit points, you can get a nice bend on the cable. and if it's an old terrace house, it won't fall down like a new build would when you drill holes.

Love that word ‘fettling’. The carpenter that worked on my house, an old Yorkshire git, used that word. Knew every trick in the book and made templates for everything.

Unless you can introduce a change in height at the same time, i.e. a vertical 'S' as it rounds the corner, then this is how it is.
