Hi guys, just finished my apprenticeship with the n.h.s. and they are refusing to recognise me as an electrician or pay me more money,is it really that difficult to start doing a few jobs for yourself/set up a small business,i have a small van and all the tools, test equipment and stuff, any advice from out there would be much appreciated.
Pete.

All this sounds like is getting a skilled man for nowt. I know that if your a new tradesman it takes time to get upto speed on stuff.......but even so you have to be recognised as having served your time and should be getting the appropriate rate etc.If its the nhs van you use then dont be tempted to go on site to installs etc in it as it only takes someone to see it and report it (believe you me theres many a nosy, nasty little jobsworth about)...........

If they won't make you up to a sparks grade then get the union in! Go onto the intranet of your Local Heath Board, go to workforce, then HR Policies, and file a formal grievance to start the ball rolling. It will first go to your line manager, if he doesn't play ball then it automatically escalates and HR get involved.

can't second the union option enough. once the union are involved lots of other unscrupulous behaviour on their part will be headed off at the pass. and the more things they try, the more documentation is in place to support you.
it may be that there's not many stewards around (like the hospital my wife works in), don;t let that put you off. find one.
if there isn;t one, find out who your union are and contact your area office. area officers eat managers for breakfast.
