I have a dimmer switch in my dining room. My son was begging me to remove the dimmer switch because he thinks it will burn out the ceiling fan motor (yes it controls both light and ceiling fan together). I told him many times it makes no sense but he never listened. Then one day he decided to superglue the dimmer at brightest setting. And now I can't make the light dim anymore, however I can pull the chain to turn the fan and light off. Is there a way I can remove a superglue or I would have to buy a new dimmer?

Welcome to the forum.
Have a read of this as to why you shouldn't use a dimmer switch for a fan.

Whoops, I guess he was right, and he was also trying to tell me that the dimmer was why the fan is buzzing, but I didn't see how it makes sense, I thought the fan was just old, but now I guess he was right about it too.

I had seen separate fan and light controls but it requires third wire, we only have 2 wires. And I still want to be able to make the light dim. Does that mean I would have to pay extra $$$ to run a third wire?

Fit a standard switch for it but replace the lamp for an LED type with remote control dimming - a handful of $’s and quick!

Thanks so much. I searched for such LED and found some that could actually change colors, which would be useful for a party. I'm getting some!

Will have to get a standard switch soon. I hope it gets rid of buzzing, We were actually looking into getting a new ceiling fan because we want a quiet fan, but if buzzing noise can go away with a standard switch, we might keep this fan after all.

While I was doing further research, I found out bigger problems dimmer could cause, like on those YouTube videos:

Now I feel bad for not at least doing research.

Excellent! And...... don't feel bad, please. On a scale of 1-100 of daft things that people do that we see on this site.... you're not even a 1/4" towards first base!
