enterd a house today to install 6 times firerated down lights in a bathroom.checked cu first customer said they had just recently had it upgraded by a british gas subcontractor split load rcd cu ,all well and good i thought .how wrong was i! climbed into loft unscrewd nearest j.b no earths to lighting circuit .no notice on cu to state niether up nor down lights had a cpc. asked customer to see test certs from cu instalation. and as he said it was put in two months ago by an niceic domestic installer.some how he had managed to get a r1 r2 reading on both circuits and a zs reading on both circuits. in comments on existing installation he had put NONE he also managed:eek::eek: to get a continuity reading on the water earth , very clever as there was no such earth,16 mm main earth put on test sheet >it was 10mm no buzzbar cover ,and when he had put the cover on the cu he had screwed through the top insulation on the 25mm main incoming line.god help us !!!

Sounds like a nightmare of a job, unfortunately its all to common, not just with BG but with other DI too. Despite all the certificate and report filling, there are still loads if sparks who just used forms as something to show the client or part p assessor.

Some sparks really need to up there game.

i rang the company concernd and surprise surprise they said that the guy who signed the cert had been sacked due to poor workmanship but that they would be around to retest first thing tommorow and rectify some of the issues.

Hi

Customer should take this up with NIC complaints,, may find contractor is not a member at all, We are Select members sister company of ECA here in Scotland and at our annual acessment the inspector goes through all certs issued from last accessment and picks one or two and we then visit the site and results are checked by retesting circuits he selects.

Hi all. Forgive me if I'm being Fickk her but I was always under the impression that if you are just replacing the CCU then the only test cert you were required to provide was a minor works cert for the CCU and supply tails???

if i changed a CU and there was no earth on the lighting, i would deffo. put this on the cert, and label on CU. also explain to client what was wrong and why.

No, you must provide an Electrical Installation Certificate, the reason being that you have altered the characteristics of every circuit by changing the protective devices.

agreed, EIC not MWC, but how would you code the lack of cpc on lighting. i would put it as code 2 unless there were any metal fittings, then i would code 1
