Parents have just had a PV system fitted. Panels on roof linked to inverter and then via Static Monolithic Meter to Consumer Unit. My question is :- How do you know how much energy goes back into the grid and how much you have used. I would have thought the monolithic meter would show this but not sure. And even if the meter does this automatically can anyone describe how the technical aspects behind this work (not how a monolithic meter works but how it works in conjuntion with the supplied domestic meter)

Some DNO's will fit one some will charge you, some do it FOC others dont fit them they just give you 50% of what tyhe system is capable of generating.
Get in touch with you DNO>

Until Smart meters are rolled out it is very unlikely the supplier will fit an import export meter. The meters are being installed by the supplier rather than the DNO as a smart meter will be registered to a particular supplier rather than the DNO. Until then the DNO is allowing 50% of what's generated as an export at 3p per unit. I don't know of a accurate way of knowing export to use.

A couple of points to bear in mind:

- deeming of export can only apply to systems up to 30kW. Over that an export meter must be fitted if the customer wants to be paid for exports.
- the 50% deeming figure is laid down in the FiTs legislation for PV, wind, CHP and AD, and it is 75% for hydro.

the only way you can work out how much power is being wasted ie put back into the grid is to know exactly how much power you are useing and comparing that with what the inverter says it is generateing and taking the one away from the other!! or get a buy back meter installed! a good way of gaugeing that your putting power back into the grid is "has your existing meter stopped? or if you have an old meter is it going backwards!" the generation meter you have is paying your parents £0.413 for every 1.0 it shows which is by far the best investment you can get at the moment for your money, for every 2.0 it says on that meter you are getting £0.03. Does it really matter knowing how much power goes back into the grid?
